I recently went to a talk hosted by UPenn, Harvard, Stanford, Duke, and Georgetown in Baltimore, Maryland called Exploring College Options. I love learning about global econ and investment banking, specifically the US and global stock markets, so naturally, I was interested in Wharton at UPenn. ECO definitely got me SUPER interested in UPenn, I absolutely loved the philosophies of the school and the incredible environment and it seems perfect for my character and interests, but I digress. So, about me, I am a junior at a private Catholic high school in Towson/Baltimore, Maryland. I have two citizenships for the United States and Portugal, my parents emigrated from Sweden and Portugal for various reasons when they were in their 20s. My economic background is irrelevant because UPenn doesn’t consider that in their application process. I am considered latino on my applications because my father is Portuguese and Spanish. Also, my great uncle is Antonio Guterres of the UN. Academically, I am probably top 10% of my class which has 330 students. I am in my school’s most rigorous academic scholars program along with about 20 others. I have an unweighted 92/4.0 GPA my sophomore and junior years, and an 88 as a freshman. With my school’s weight system, it translates to a 98/4.0 and 94/4.0, respectively. I am a National Merit Scholarship Qualifier but didn’t receive any grants from NMS but did get one from my father’s company per my PSAT score. I got 1500 on the SAT and 34 on the ACT. APs don’t matter in the selection process but I have taken AP Physics, APWH, and APUSH. In terms of extracurriculars, 2 time VEX Robotics world championship qualifier, once 9th in the world and once 40th. I am the founder and president of the FBLA chapter at my school, no competition yet. 3 years of JV Cross Country, 3 years of JV Outdoor Track (winter), and 1 year of JV Tennis and 1 year of Varsity Tennis. I also am involved in some leadership roles at my school and have about 30 hours of service. 1 year as an NHS member, which was not available as a Freshman or Sophomore. 2 years as Spanish National Honors Society member, not available as a freshman. 2 years as a STEM member, not available as a freshman. Wharton is currently my dream and stretch school, if anyone can tell me my chances of getting in or any questions about my transcript, let me know, please. Thank you very much for reading this and responding, much appreciated. p.s. I am applying for early decision
mod note: combined/edited together two very similar threads.
possible? based on what? always possible
Well to adequately answer that question, what are your stats? What do you do in your free time? ECs? At a certain level of stats, everyone is virtually the same. You need to stand out because penn is getting hundreds of thousands of applications with only so many spots. The truth is, it is possible for everyone who meets the expected benchmark. Most that get rejected had what it takes to succeed there. It boils down to luck. So basically, cast a wide net if you want to have higher chances of getting into the Ivies.
Let’s start with some comforting news, applying ED generally means less people to compete with so higher chances of getting accepted. That said, ED also has LOTS of strong applicants that are just as good if not better than you. I stand by my previous post that it is to a certain point based on luck. Yes you are qualified but so are many others. Yes you have a chance but so do all those that apply.
So a quick anecdote: I fell in love with penn too actually during my hs years and I too applied ED - i was denied. I had your same ACT score, I was in the IB program despite being in the states, ranked 7 out of 300ish students, 4.3 weighted gpa, and held many piano concerts at carnegie hall, lincoln center, and other respected venues along with competing nationally and holding titles in music competitions, plus my other ECs of independent research and sports.
Whatever Penn was looking for, it wasn’t me. I guess they felt that I just wasn’t a fit for them. So here’s the other thing: not only do YOU need to love the school, but the school has to love you back. The school needs to think that you will fit in with the environement, with the existing students, etc. That said, I do encourage you to cast a wider net and find other attractive qualities in other top schools if thats what you are aiming for. Why not apply to all ivies to increase you chances? If denied, it doesn’t mean you didn’t have what it takes, because many that do get rejected could have easily succeeded there. It just means that perhaps, the school felt that you wouldn’t fit in.
So don’t stress. I got into other top 15 schools and despite not going to my ‘dream school’, everything worked out swell!
Thanks, Nepthys55, this was very insightful.
My pleasure and good luck!
Not enough info
But please have your screen name changed. Your full name should not be your screen name
It’s possible, it’s a great choice for a reach school for you to apply to. But please spend some time and energy looking for schools that you could also love that have higher rates of acceptance. The odds on admission for you are probably better than some, but it’s still much, much more likely that you won’t get in so plan accordingly.
Please use some common sense and don’t go posting private information about yourself or your family, in this day and age you have to be careful.
