I am a student who wants to enter the medical field in the future. Right now I am considering USC for undergrad because I like the environment and its closeness to family. Because USC is better know for its engineering, film, business, communication schools (as opposed to medicine), will attending USC as an aspiring med student put me at a disadvantage in the future? I heard that this problem doesn’t matter as much for undergrad students, but I’m still not sure. Thanks for your advice.
A pre-med track is a collection of courses that virtually every university offers. If a college had a wonderful program in water ballet it’d be better known for that than pre-med.
You have good reasons for liking USC. The key factors for med school will be your GPA, your MCAT scores … and money (lots of it). Attending USC will not put you at a disadvantage (unless you cannot keep a high GPA there or you cannot afford it without big loans.)
From what I’ve heard from both others and USC itself, USC gives very, very good support to those in the pre-med track. They help you prepare for MCAT, have dedicated pre-med track advisors to help you with your course selection to fulfill med school requirements and applications and to guide you through the process, etc. I’m pretty sure this is the case for every well-endowed private school. However, I was very impressed by how USC puts so much effort into helping their students get into their dream med school.
