Or will you get caught?

It's about as safe as pirated software can get. It's actually kinda scary what sort of stuff you can find up on there.

Yeah, you should be pretty darn safe if you only use the Cal DC++ hub for your piracy needs. Torrents are somewhat safe, but I've known 1 or 2 people being busted for using them already (I'm one of them :) ).

Azure you were busted for torrenting? Whatd they do to you?

There's a reason why Azure is known as "One-testicle Azure". Just kidding.

DC++ is the safest P2P method at Cal, simply because it's on the private network. The RIAA/MPAA/whatever can't just snoop in whenever they like - they have to get authorization from the University first. And until that date, it's full movies in about 2 minutes, full ISOs for games in about the same amount, and full DVDs in about 5-10 minutes. It simply can't be beat. Torrents, on the other hand, are even less safe than at home because these organizations specifically go after college students (they can tell from your IP address) for easy money, since they know you're not about to meet them in court.

ownagerisms - I just got an e-mail from ResComp indicating that they were contacted by Universal, blah, blah, blah. I lost my in-room internet connection for a week (for like the 3rd time of the year, actually, so it wasn't anything shocking) and got a warning that the next time I get caught with a copyright violation that an incident report will be submitted to the Manager for Student Judicial Affairs (who will then meet with me and determine an appropriate sanction). Someone on my floor that also got busted got pretty much the same thing.

what were you downloading? music or movies?

Neither. Both me and the other guy that got busted were downloading TV shows (they obviously weren't on DC++, which is why we used torrents).

What'd they do to you? :+

Look up 4 posts.

Did that make you stop torrenting?

Of course not.

do you use peer gaurdian or tor? would those even help?

Azure: your coolness went up a factor of 10 in my book!

anyone know if binary newsreaders work in cal dorms?? or do they block ports?

my friend downloaded a lot from torrents in a short period of time and he got a letter from rescomp. i haven't heard of anyone getting in trouble for DC++

If you use tor for p2p, please, get hit by a train.

I got a letter from universal media for a tv show, lost my IRC for a week, was using peer guardian.

Do people get into trouble for just TV shows or Software as well?
