First and foremost,I have no interest in going to UT Austin,I actually have my heart set on SMU:) Anyways,I'm a junior, been doing some searching on a few public and private Universities, and everyone keeps saying University of Texas in Austin is so incredibly hard to get into and that they only take top 8%/10% and if you aren't in that, then you shouldn't even apply yaddayadda.
BUT,if they are so picky, why did some of my friends get into UT Austin? They had very low GPA's,when I say low,I mean low low, like 2.5 low haha, sure they were in band(how else would I know them?),or colorguard(which is what I'm in),their class rankings were bad, they weren't in any clubs or extracurricular activities and they aren't rich so they couldn't pay them off.So how else would they get in if it's so complicated?I'm assuming they had good SAT/ACT scores and I know for a fact a few of them did the interview. They aren't even going to continue band or colorguard which is dumb imo.
And I guess i'm frustrated because I was reading some reviews on SMU and alot of people kept down talking SMU,saying it's only for snobby white rich kids who's parents will donate a building etc.I love SMU,i think it could offer me the best education,so yea I'm alittle butthurt.
But if UT Austin is so hard to get into, how did these people I know get in?!?!How?
What happened to UT is picky about rank,GPA etc??

Oh and if I do an interview with SMU,does it help my chances? And should I not get inteardropsWould it help my chances at UT Austin(yuck),Texas Tech(Double yuck),or Texas A&M commerce(Triple yuck)

Yea,but the Top 8%/10% rule is for in state students,we are in state haha.We don’t go to a “great” school either, just another school in the Dallas area

uhm… certain programs are tough to get into (IE. Business, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, some Natty Sciences). However, majors such as communication and COLA majors are really easy to get into , even if you have a low GPA. SMU also takes kids with low GPAs- I know a bunch of kids with low 2.0’s who got into SMU and keep bragging like its an ivy league when its not even close. If you want to waste your money on an undergrad degree at SMU, by all means go ahead. A close relative of mines went to SMU for undergrad, switched majors a billion times, and ended up going to grad school at TAMU . SMU does not have the variety of majors like UT (IE. SMU Engineering dept. only has EE, MechE, Management, etc. while has UT Engineering has PetroE, ChemE, BME, CivilE, MechE, EnviroE, etc.). IMO, UT is a better school academically in comparison to SMU and I bet a bunch of people would agree with me on that.

Smurfette12: What’s the purpose of going onto a school’s forum and then bashing said school?

And the thing is, this thread is pointless because you don’t have nearly enough information to provide even the slightest trace of an accurate assessment of your friends academic credentials because a. you don’t know their academic resume ie GPA, SAT/ACT scores, class rank, course difficulty, number of clubs, etc… and b. you never saw their essays. In addition, you have never been of the admissions committee at UT so you aren’t exactly the expert on what UT does and does not want in an applicant.

Also, even if your friends academic credentials weren’t up to par, bfd because there are plenty of kids whose academic credentials are pretty good. In the end, your five or six friends only make up a very minute portion of the, throwing a number out here, 18,000 students UT accepts a year.

Last but not least…Who makes their FIRST post on cc a flame thread? Honestly, why?

SMU is a great school… So dont worry when people talk down. It doesnt matter where a school is academically if you dont like the school you wont succeed there.

As someone once told me, whats a harvard degree worth if you die the next day??

Why are you getting so butthurt?I’m simply asking a question.I’m not trying to downtalk UT but people make it out to be like an IVY & even on threads I’ve read on on here, people say UT only cares about rank and GPA,my friends had low GPA’s and my school is an IB so it’s hard enough to get a good GPA being in AP,let alone regulars. It’s not my problem if you’re taking this personally

Smurfette12: I’m merely pointing out that your initial post is ridiculous. If you aren’t adequately familiar with your friends academic resumes, why are you questioning their admittance to UT? In addition, the title of your thread is also ridiculous because hard is a relative term and can mean different things to different people.

I’m not taking this personally because I don’t go to UT. I just think that it’s inappropriate to bash a school in its own thread. And fwiw, my school has roughly the same reputation as SMU, except we’re considerably better ranked. Do I take my schools reputation personally? No

Correlation? Maybe. But I wouldn’t go as far to say that if you go to a school you don’t like, you won’t be academically successful.

■■■■■ post? The poster felt a little immature but not offensive enough to be ■■■■■■■■ :\
Maybe my overplaying of video games has led me to expect a higher degree stupidity/annoyance from so called “■■■■■■”.

First clue that this is a ■■■■■…UT does not interview…and I am guessing that SMU doesn’t either. I also HIGHLY double anyone with those stats would be getting anywhere near UT unless they are going to ACC :)

Good catch, frever. It’s the same person, unless they’re twins who happened to join CC on the same day. Why use two different names unless you’re trying to stir up trouble?

You seem to have lots to say, but nothing of substance. SMU’s current average high school GPA of accepted students is a 3.57, so I find it hard to believe that you know “a bunch” of kids with GPA’s in the low 2.0 range. An SMU undergrad degree is by all means not a waste of money. Look at the stats.

And your close relative who switched majors a billion times switched majors a billion times because she’s indecisive and a mess. Sounds like her problem, not SMU’s.

I’m not going to argue which school is a better pick because thats subjective. However, I will argue that you probably have no idea what you’re talking about, so people should take that into consideration when reading your posts.
