Is UVA on the rise academically?

The U. as a whole will never go private - the U. still needs the money that the state provides and the Legislature will never let it happen. The state has too much invested in the U. (emotionally and in past capital spending), and they want the in-state admissions preference and tuition reduction.

In effect, the Law School and Darden already operate like private entities, and do not receive direct state funds. I could see the Med School moving in that direction. There is less pressure for that to happen as long as the health system is able to provide massive subsidies to the Med School. About the only other component that could eventually be privatized might be the Comm School, but a change that big will not happen during the enrollment of current students.
