Is UVA really that hard to get into?

Just wondering is UVA really hard to get into? Today our school said who got into what colleges. Only like 12 people are going to UVA. I really worry that I might not get into UVA. UVA is my dream school. My heart is set on going there. So far I have kept up my grades. Freshman year I had like a 4.08 gpa. Sophmore year I have like a 4.13. Also in sophmore year I'm in 1 AP class and the rest are pretty hard classes. I'm also in a few EC's. They are not spectacular, but pretty good. Like tennis, Debate, Key Club and then more for junior year. Can someone help me. I really worry that I won't get in.

For what it's worth, it was my safety school. Not hard for me.

Only 12 people from your school are going, but how many were accepted? UVA's yield rate is far from 100%

Try to get into the top 5% of your class and get a solid (1350+) SAT score. Pad your app with some decent EC's and write some solid essays. If you're instate, you'll probably get in.

Same here with regards to safety school.

I'd say it really depends on a lot of other factors, OOS? Legacy? International/Minority? First person in family history to go to college? Nobel prize winner? Does your high school typically get a lot of acceptances but always reject UVa? Mine has usually went when we're accepted + haven't had a lot of people apply, so results are usually good. But then again I go to this hardcore academic preppy school, ugh.

I think I'm just going to have to try to get in. If I don't get in I'll probably just go to like Va Tech or community college and then maybe transfer. Also at my school in each grade like the top 10-20 will probably go to UVa. I guess I'm somewhere there so I guess maybe I'll get in.

UVA was also my kind of sorta safety school but really I am honored to be accepted and will be attending.

For what it's worth, everyone who applied (except one who was waitlisted) at my IB school got accepted. I know many, many high achieving kids at other schools who did not get in. I don't think you can compare a full IB applicant (we are the 4 to 7 year bunch) to the rest of the application pool though.

"Only 12 people got in to UVA" --> Well that figure is relatively high! Unles you graduated from TJ, I wouldn't be surprised that more than 10 people get in. Are you In state or OOS?

Yeah, IB tends to prepare you really well. I feel like my IB courseload made my application competitive and thus gave an edge to my admission.

Well if you're wondering if you can get into UVA then you can post your stats and we can estimate your chances later when you've gone through junior year. Your WGPA isn't a stat- your class rank, whether actual or estimated if your school doesn't rank, is though.

I applied UVA ED, but not because I was desperate to get in and worried about my chances. If I had wanted to go anywhere else it would have also been a safety for me. A top 10%er in Virginia with a half-decent SAT score has a good chance of making it in. You say 12 people are going/got in but how many people are in your school? My school sent about 12 people, had a few more accepted and a few more who could have gotten in but didn't apply due to military academies and EDs at more or similarly selective universities. We had about 180 people at the end of the year (though beginning of senior year was like 215-220, and a bunch got kicked out for drugs/violence/etc and ended up in jail or elsewhere.. lol).

hey! our school just let out our lists on the same day as your school and we had 12 people, too. I wonder if you go to the same school. I am one of those 12 people, and let me tell you...those were the only ones who got in. A lot of other people applied, including one girl that had a 4.1, and got waitlisted/rejected. Just take the hardest courseload you can. It really helps. I think that definitely made the difference in my application.

12 people getting in is a lot. High GPA + High SAT + High Rank if in state = pretty much a one way ticket. For some people it is hard to get into and for others it is not. just depends, but overall I'd say its not THAT hard

my school sends one kid per year to uva, at best.

Hey Future wahoo do you got to Broad Run High School? Or anywhere in Loudoun County?

Stone Bridge :-)

I wish it wasnt so rediculously hard out of state. I would've loved to apply ED to UVA. I just cant get in no matter what I do. I visited two years ago and fell in love. Everything I want in a college. But alas, i'll take my ED somewhere else :/
BTW, I go to a very top public school, and over the past two years, no one has gotten into (i think?) or gone (def. not) to UVA. We did have one person go to URichmond. BTW, we sent 23 kids out of 400 to Ivies. That's saying how rediculous UVA is OOS.

jPoD, why can't you apply ED?

With regards to the thread topic, UVA is like any other school. If you are an excellent student then you stand a fairly good chance of getting in. A good GPA, good essays, good SAT scores, and a high class rank are definitely a bonus and a good indicator of your chances--especially if you're in-state. But as with any school of UVA's caliber--well any school at all, really--some people who were "shoo-ins" will get rejected, and some people who "had no chance" will get in.

I go to a private sschool in D.C. and 5 kids applied and 3 got in. One had a 2360 SAT...so yea she got in
one was a black girl who's grandpa was the dean of african american affairs

and the other was a regualr black girl

What was special about the regular girl other than being regular?

i honestly don't know, but she was black and she's a maryland resident. Her GPA as just okay but she had a 30 ACT. Her courseload was okay but not the best so i don't know. Im curious also. Maybe it was that 30 ACT

What was her rank? It could have been the ACT or she wrote some really good essays.

our school doesn't rank so its really hard to tell, but i hope i can be as lucky as her this year when it is my turn to apply. Even though our school doesn't rank she was probably top 10% at the best 23-25/250.
