Is UVA really that preppy/stuck up

I've always heard how preppy uva is, but i was wondering if its true or just the popular stereotype. UVA is a great school but i just dont know if i would fit in.

Not any more than any other top school. In fact, as a state school, it likely has more diversity across socioeconomic lines than many of its peers.

In a school with nearly 13,000 undergrads everyone can find a place to fit it.

lisa birnbach thought so, but that was 26 years ago.

okay maybe my post got deleted. but the girls, especially sorostitutes, are stuck-up and think they're all that in the school. the boys are nicer (most only to girls) anyway.

I've been blasted before for my comments on this, but what the heck--I'll try again. D is a second year from the west coast. From her perspective, the school initially felt diverse, but with a sizable minority of preppy-some VERY preppy- kids. Way more conservative/conformist types than she had experienced in her large west coast public school. She admitted to moments of feeling like a "fish out of water". However, as stated above, the school is large and filled with all types of people. Over time, it has been easy for her to find a niche--even as a non pop-collared type who IS in a sorority..and loves it. UVA really is such a unique blend of different cultures. She has found the school to be more than diverse enough to find plenty of people who share her more moderate attitude.

There are more hicky people in VA than in california where there's virtually none. The greek influence is so huge (1 in every 3 people) and the prevalence of sororities - including numerous organizations - create further segregation. Alpha Phi for example ranks their girls in terms of their qualities (hair, smartness, looks, etc) and straight out tells them who's the best - and the worst girl. This is just one of the very many examples of how stuck up girls in UVA can be and I'm talking about sorority girls here. I don't believe that quantifying girls in that manner will add to the diversity of the school. I also wish to add the irony that although some girls didn't make certain sororities, other sororities take them - since there are about 30 in UVa - due to quota requirements. Rather than finding a niche, I prefer to think that to keep the sisterhood alive, a niche has to be created and therefore maintained. I find other girls okay, and plenty are nice. But the greatest thing about UVA people is that they are all friendlier than in most other schools. This is due to UVA's location in the borderline East/South, and the Southern student population is significant.

I am not sure if the school has a "unique blend of different cultures." Sure they exist, but the prevalent Greek population and a lack of concern for what goes on outside the UVa bubble trump the idea that UVa is diverse.

In terms of how preppy UVa students are, I would consider them to be very preppy. I think "elitist" is probably the more correct term to describe them. Polos, pearls, dirty and scruffy hair (for guys), and nantucket pants mark this air of elitism. In place of them you'd often see sorority girls and fratdaddys flashing their alpha mu sigma chi or whatever greek event shirts. Everyone tends to dress pretty well and alike each other. I would say that UVa students have a sense of bland prepiness that is very different from what you might see in New York for example.

There are not 30 sororities at Uva.

Okay, my bad. It's actually slightly more than half that number that's registered with the inter-sorority council. But anyway, you still get Asian sororities not registered with the council. Ironic if you think about it.

No hicks in Cali--have you been east of the 5? Fresno, Stockton, Weed??

Victorville?

The multicultural and NPHC (historically African-American) sororities are not under NPC rules and don't handle recruitment in the same way. Intersorority groups are under the NPC umbrella.

And speaking of hicks, we used to live about an hour from Barstow, CA. This little drivethrough town in the Mojave Desert had plenty of them. Victorville was considered bustling! :)

"But the greatest thing about UVA people is that they are all friendlier than in most other schools. This is due to UVA's location in the borderline East/South, and the Southern student population is significant."

Exactly what I meant about the "blend of different cultures"......add a significant number (33%) of out of staters, and you have a "unique blend"- something not found at many other schools.

There are certainly hicks everywhere... don't people think that MOST of them live on the west coast?....haha.

The term "hick" is derogatory and downright racially insensitive. Tenniscraze should know better.

Racially insensitive? I don't think so. It's just quite typical of the South in my opinion.

Ok, Kramer.

'Hick' doesn't have anything to do with race. It's a derogatory term based on geography, which is why tenniscraze is wrong. At the most maybe 20% of Virginia's population are "hicks", and that's including people in cities such as Roanoke and the students in Montogomery County. CA, having a lot more people and a lot of space, probably has way more 'hicks' than Virginia. It looks like others have already demonstrated that here.

Of course, tenniscraze is perpetually confused about what's going on at UVA, so it's not a surprise.

Wrong about what? Virginia is located in the South, and the hick association relating to VA's geography was exactly my point. Plus, I didn't mention anything about hicks in UVA. I'm just saying that compared to California (note: geographically), there's proportionally more hicks in VA.

haha, yeah, to the OP, you can't take tenniscraze seriously on this issue.

How the **** do polo shirts and dirty hair mark the air of elitism?

man, this guy is kind of out there.

i think my opinions changed on the subject of UVa's preppiness/eliteness issues this past semester. for all the talk here about how uva is diverse socioeconomically and yada yada, its probably the most self segregated school in the world. the way i see it, i feel like there definately is a strong - maybe not southern, but wealthy wannabe southern - elitest crowd that is anything but shrinking.

i dont know how many of you frequent bars, but is it just me or are bars are becoming more and more ridiculous every semester. there are now soley 3 flavors of people at bars. 1) miserable townies. 2) the cute, dumb, and annoying first year girls. 3) uber frat boys and uber sorority girls. heavy heavy emphasis on no. 3.

ive rarely go to bars now as i don't fit into one of those 3 categories.
