My uw GPA WITHOUT frosh year is a 3.67. My freshman year brings it way down. I have a huge upward trend in GPA and rigor of courseload. I have 2 leadership positions, a handfull of awards, a lot of stupid clubs (NHS, SHNS, ect.). My recomendations should be amazing, one from my counselor who loves me and one from this doctor at the hospital I voulunteer at (200+ hours). He said he will write it about a new program at the hospital I started (one of my main EC's) that helped under privledged kids pay for thie medical treatment. Something very unique happened to me(which effected my low frosh GPA) and am including it in my essyas, my counselor has proof read it and she says she honestly thinks its one of the best she's read ( I think she has been a counselor for like 10 years). Mt ACt is in the 27-28 range, I'm in-state, and am going to apply ED. What is UVa (in terms of reach-match-safet, and everything inbetween) if I apply ED?

Please? Also, 10 chars.

your ACTis very low, and your GPA isn't high, but it seems that your ECs, recs, and essays will help you alot. You should take the SAT just to see if you do better. In state will definatley help alot. I think its a reach/match. If you get your test scores up it would help alot.

I think Virginia Tech and James Madison are more in your range. If worst comes to worst, you can start off at one of these for a semester or two, and then, if you get really good grades, try to transfer to UVA.

Dont worry about it....colleges doesnt always see grades... they look at what makes you different from everybody else... For example i have a History teacher who had a gpa of 3.28 and still got in Columbia University, an Ivy league College... People with over 4.0 gpas and dam good ecs and sats get rejected and he still got in.. According to him, he wanted to study History which he did, and he did lots of stuff relating to History that made him unique from everybody else and thats wat Columbia saw in him... So its all about the luck of the draw, but doesnt mean you shouldnt do well in school

I think your #s are too low.

I know they are par-sub-par, but I guess I'm asking if good essays/rec/Ec's make up for it, or are the numbers too low? I'm planning on applying ED.

It is a reach but not impossible.

How much is applying in-state and ED going to help? Can you give me a % chance of me getting in, in your opinion?

apply||||||||||||||||||||||||

those things will help a lot, especially ED. I'd say you have about a 20% shot.

There is a chances forum that's really better for this kind of question.

You don't say whether you are in-state or out-of-state. It makes a huge difference. Out-of-state at UVa is super selective.

He said he was instate. I'd just apply, because if you don't your percent is 0%. If you apply it's surely better than that.

Where within the state will also play a part; it is much more difficult from Northern Virginia.

Being instate, your GC should be in a position to assess your chances. I couldn't offhand find ACT/SAT stats for the school. I did see that the admit rate for your GPA -- assuming they are willing to forget the freshman year -- is 11%. But I don't know if this stat is for weighted or unweighted GPA. There is no breakdown for instate/OOS.

Your ACT score range puts you in about the 90 to 93 percentile range. Did you score evenly across the categories or did you score substantially higher in some (perhaps the ones that are relevant to your chosen field?). You can always take the ACT again and try to get your score up. You can also do some practice and see if you will score better on the SAT.

Also, do you have any SAT IIs or APs? Any academic passions? Any particular reasons why UVA would be the best school for you? What is the rigor of your academic program compared to what is available at your school? Even assuming I were competent to assess your chances (and I'm not!), your post doesn't include all the information that an ad comm would look at in assessing your application.

Of course, high chances or low, if you want UVA you should at least try for it. What we say on CC about your chances isn't relevant!

You have a shot, but as most here would agree, UVA is a bit of a reach for you.

Unlike many schools, ED acceptance may actually be harder than RD acceptance. They have a special advising office for legacies, and I spoke with the counselor after the ED results came out. They indicated that ED went pretty strictly by stats this year. Many students were deferred simply because their gpa was not above the base level but their applications would be looked at again in the spring under a wider lens. (I think the base gpa required for instate ED was 3.7 or 3.8 but I am not absolutely sure.)

RD, by contrast, involves a more wholistic approach. They have more time to look at the applications and supplements. This is where your essays and EC's would kick in and give you a boost. So if you apply ED and are rejected, keep giving them updated information and hope for the best in the RD round.

(My son has an application in for RD.)

The KEY bit of info is that you're IN STATE. Whole different game with a school like UVA. Have your GC call them...they'll probably give her some good info.

By the way, the word is NOT "rejected". You are accepted, deferred or denied.

Amen sugaree. I hate the word "rejected". It is way too negative.
