Is UVM a possible match for my son?

We are OOS in Virginia .
Attends a fairly competive school in suburban Richmond . Has 4.0 weighted gpa ( guessing around 3.6-3.7 unweighted ). All honors classes freshman :sophomore year ( a’s and b’s ) , plus pre ib. classes in Spanish . 4 Ap classes this year plus ib Spanish 5, next year 3 Ap plus ib Spanish 6. 1220 sat , took again yesterday but not sure if his score will go up based on what he said . Decent extra curriculars ( track,’soccer , nhs , beta club, key club ). Counselor at 4h club
For several years, volunteer at math science center . Interested in law enforcement t( wants to go into fbi ) and maybe study psychology . Thanks for your Help

Sounds like a match to me! My daughter was accepted OOS with Presidential Scholarship ($12k/year) with similar stats — 3.7uw & 1280. I do think the money is tied to SAT score, so the higher the better!

@Cof22mom thanks for the feedback , good to know . ( just hope he likes it ). Is your daughter happy there ? Do you have to be a skier to like it ?? Thanks again !

My daughter will be starting in the fall. She is extremely excited. LOVES Burlington it is by far the best college town amongst the schools she applied to. From what I have read from other posts, and the students we met on tours, you don’t have to ski. But if you do there are plenty of cheap opportunities. There really is a lot to like about UVM. Best of luck as you start this journey. It can be quite a roller coaster!

My son will also be starting in the fall. His GPA is similar to your son. He got the $17,000 Presidential Scholarship which was probably tied to his AP scores and ACT scores (did not submit SAT). I believe class rank is a factor as well. I recommend applying Early Action! Regardless of how much merit money he gets, he has a very good chance at admission.

@momof2boys65 thanks sir feedback . Congrats to your son on admission and in the scholarship . Encouraging to know that my son has a decent shot . Rank not tremendously high … top 25 % I think , he may not be getting any scholarships ,
Just hoping for admission . Thanks again !

Scholarship $ is also tied to the major and the college they are accepted into I believe. EA seems to increase the chances for later awards. My S (current freshman) was not a skier before going but did ski this year and really enjoyed it. Class rank, if your school ranks, is a $ factor. Ours did not and that did not seem to hurt him.

@Senior1999 I think he will definitely qualify for something. I seem to recall finding some sort of calculator on the UVM website to determine what scholarship a student would be eligible for based on scores, gpa and rank. I recall you needed to be in the top 20% for Presidential. I calculated he would get $15,000 but he ended up getting more. He will probably qualify for at least the $12,000 or more Trustees. Edited to add the link:https://www.uvm.edu/studentfinancialservices/netprice_calculator. If you plug in all the info it will come up with an estimated scholarship.

@eandesmom thanks for info ! Glad
To hear about about the skiing . He’s relatively athletic , so I hope he could pick
It up . Do you know about athletics ? Do students go to sporting events ?
That’s seems to be an important piece for my son. Thanks again!

@momof2boys65 thanks for all that info . We need to visit this summer , and I hope he likes it as much as I liked it when I visited with my senior last year . I guess ultimately my hope is he can get in . With a decent t gpa and a decent day scores , it seems the options of fairly good schools is limited .

Sat scores not day scores

Have him take the ACT. My son did much better on the ACT than the SAT, and even better thr second time. I think your son’s GPA is definitely a match for admission.

@momof2boys65 unfortunately , he took the act before the sat , and he did not do well . Think for him, he felt too rushed , especially on reading comprehension . Sat is better test for him because he’s not as stressed for time ( though still stressed ). Will see how yeatdays test went in a few weeks . May need tutor over summer . Thanks for suggestion !!

My kids’ high school in suburban Boston sends about 20 kids per year to UVM. It’s got a great reputation for solid academics, a good vibe, and an awesome college town. Burlington is just a great town…I cannot sing its praises enough. You don’t have to be a skier but your son may be inclined to try it. Lots of outdoor actives to be had. I’ve been told kids do go to hockey matches and some go to basketball games as well. It’s not a UVA type of college sports experience…but nonetheless pretty good for a New England school!

@SwimmingDad thanks for feedback . Good to hear such great things about about the skiing . Do you happen to know about attendance at sports events ? So people go ? He really wants a school with that sort of environment . I have yet to visit with him. Not even sure he’ll like it ( my other son did ). Thanks again !

@Senior_1999 My sons tell me that people go (second hand info). That said, they are coming from a high school of 2300 where maybe 50 kids will go to a football or basketball game. So their friends may not be the best source of info. But as one of them said to me “so long as your friends go then it’s fun, right?”

Thanks @SwimmingDad . I agree with that philosophy .
