Is W(withdraw) on the transcript very bad?

Hi, I am a sophomore. For my freshman year, I had 3.92 GPA and 4.0 on Science GPA. This semester, I am taking a humanity class. This class is killing me. Two essays and one final. I got my first essay back and it's C+. I feel very bad about it. I am thinking withdraw this class to not affect my GPA, but it will have W on my transcript. I am doing well in all bio/science classes, just not the humanity type student.

I don't know how W will affect me when I am applying medical school. I also don't know if it's common for students to get W nowadays. Please help me on this decision.

Of course, I will talk to the professor before I make final decision. But just want to see if W is an option to go.

Thank you!

You can do the math. One C or better in one course will have negligible impact on your overall GPA. If you can get a C or better I’d stick with it. IMO I don’t think one W would be fatal but I think the C or better would be less eye catching to a adcom.

One W is not going to red flag your application.

However, the general assumption that a human reader will make about a late withdrawal is that you withdrew because you’re in danger of failing the class. (So W or W/P = C- or D in their minds.)

I might be better to take the C+ and just move on. No one’s perfect and adcomms despise “protect the GPA at all costs” game some pre-meds play.

goto professor’s office hours and find out what he want out of you. You still have two essays to go, there is still time to make up. My D was failing the Bio in Middle S, we, the parents had to have a talk with the teacher. Once we know what she expected D sail through the course without a problem and got HS AP5 in Bios and now she is potential a MD school candidate. The story behind it is that you may not know what the teachers requirements, communication is essential.

Read the threads by Bluedevilmike. He got a C or a C plus in one semester of or go…I think he got into 12 medschools. My daughter also had a C plus in orgo…she got into 9. One bad grade is not going to kill you.

Thank you all for the advice and encouragement. I finally got B+. So happy to see my grade today.

Happy 2015 to everyone!

Thanks for the update and congratulations. Good luck in future. Happy 2015 back at you.

If you never face what academic area you are weak in, how will you become proficient in that area? I can tell through your post that you might struggle with writing essays and the like. Is English your second language by chance? If I were you I would make friends with some kids who were great at writing essays but struggled in math or science or whatever. That way you can both study together while simultaneously tutoring each other. That way we have a more well-rounded student populace. I’d even volunteer as I am good in English writing but not so trained in mathematical areas i.e. calculus…;( And as far as your question I think one or two withdrawals are ok if they are early enough in the semester (2-4wks). If they are later, its likely ok as long as its just one,
