I'm considering Wesleyan as my ED school but I am not sure about the student body.

I have heard that the kids there are very intellectual. This is obviously a great thing, but I don't want all of my conversations outside of the classroom to be about academic subjects. I'd like a nice mix. I also heard that the kids there are very liberal, which is fine, but I'm afraid that as a conservative (not socially conservative), I will get attacked. Even if they were tolerant of my views, I would still like there to be diversity of thought at the school that I go to, which I'm afraid is not characteristic of Wesleyan. Also, I'm looking for a down to earth student body that has a mix of preppy, hipster, hippy, jock, etc. I don't want the school to be completely dominated by one type. I really loved the campus, size, location, weather, etc. I would have a much better chance of getting in if i ED'd, but I'm just afraid that I might be committing to a school that doesn't have the environment that I'm looking for. Thanks for the help!

This is going to be a difficult needle to thread; you’re looking for a school with lots of preppies, hipsters, hippies and jocks, but, isn’t too liberal politically; you like to discuss politics, but not academics. In many ways, you’re looking for a school that may not exist. I would say that if you are liberal socially but your idea of conservatism is that the debt ceiling should be cut without raising taxes – you’'ll probably find more people who agree with you than you might think. I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that position, but, I’ve had stranger conversations with Wesleyan students. :)

johnwesley-- Thanks for the response! When I said I want lots of preppies, hipsters, hippies and jocks, I think I misspoke. A better way of putting it is just to say that I would like a down to earth campus without a dominating social group. I just don’t want to be surrounded by 3000 jocks, 3000 hipsters, 3000 preppy kids, or 3000 hipsters. I am fine with a politically liberal school, I just am afraid that Wesleyan happens to be so liberal that it does not welcome opposing beliefs. I would have the same problem if I went to a school that is very conservative. And when I said that I want to talk about something other than academics, I didn’t mean only politics. I’m just afraid that the only conversations I’ll be having will be about 19th century literature, rather than a nice mix of intellectual and political topics and BS topics (movies, sports, tv shows, etc.). But I am afraid that you might be right when you say the right school for me does not exist. I’m really just here to find out whether or not Wesleyan is a school that has a socially and politically diverse community.

^^You’ll certainly find a mix socially. If there was ever a school that mixes the intellectual, with the political, and with the BS – it’s Wesleyan. :)
