I'm an Asian American and I plan on applying to Wisconsin, but I'm wondering if it is an all white school.

Just don't want to feel left out or out of place....

Statistics from CollegeBoard’s site:

U Wisconsin - Madison:

* 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native

So it’s predominantly white, but not “all” white. It’s up to you to determine if the minority population of ~22% is enough for your comfort level.

You can assume (USNEWS does) that the “race/ethnicity unreported” is also white.

81% isn’t the whitest school in the country, but it’s up there.

UW is predominantly white.

Compared to USC (your first choice):
24.2% Asian for Fall 2007 admits.

But, UW attracts a large number of internationals because it is a graduate/research program powerhouse.

I would recommend a visit this fall to see for yourself. Perhaps some UW students can help you out better than I can.

The minority population at UW obviously won’t begin to compare to USC, but it’s still there.

"But, UW attracts a large number of internationals because it is a graduate/research program powerhouse. "

Technically this probably means that a decent amount of the 6% of Asian students are graduate students that you likely won’t interact with much (at least in social settings) as an undergraduate. Even then, I don’t know, if you’d necessarily feel left out unless you strongly identify with Asian culture and want to share that with other people. It’s a pretty liberal college, so it’s not like people will shun you for being Asian,

On the plus side, according to the statistics, the University of Wisconsin isn’t nearly as white as the state of Wisconsin (which still fails to be as white as the city that I grew up in).

No…but its predominantly LIBERAL. LOL.

That would be just one more example of a U.S. News mistake if indeed that is what U.S. News does. But where does U.S. News say that it does that?

Lots of colleges are very happy to admit a lot of students for whom the only information they can report to the federal government is “race/ethnicity unknown.”

(See post # 4 of that thread for specific figures from various colleges.)

I live in Madison and know a number of both Asian American and Asian internationals who have attended UW. None of them have expressed feeling out of place.
