Is Wolfram Mathematica Student Edition useful?

Is Wolfram Mathematica Student Edition useful for Petroleum engineering majors?
I have all A's right now, first semester in college (really no big deal since I'm only taking a few sophomore level classes), and I want to try to make a 4.0 by the time I graduate. Not expecting this, but it is the goal I am aiming for.

Will Wolfram Mathematica Student Edition help me with this? The site says it will give me an edge, but I'm not going to trust the person who's selling the product.
Couldn't find much information on the web either.

Also, will it help me get ahead in some of the classes that I haven't taken yet? More specifically, can I study certain subjects through this program or does it not work like that?

Generally, Petroleum Engineering programs focus entirely on Excel but those that do stray tend to use MatLab. I think I used it some for Differential Equations.
