I recently got the volunteer work for a professor in the local college. Basically, I will do some data processing work. But I don’t think I will get the chance to be involved in the core part of the research project. Is such experience helpful for the application?
Mostly I would recommend that you do this because it sounds very interesting. Most likely it will give you some insight regarding how research is done. You might for example discover that research involves a lot more detail and time and failed attempts than you might expect. Research might be thought of more like snails racing a marathon than it is like a rocket taking off into space.
However, yes to me this sounds likely to be helpful in applications to universities.
Do things because you are interested in them. Your work would count as an EC but I doubt if doing data processing work for a project would move the needle in terms of college admissions more than doing any other valuable EC.
I applied for this work because I learned programming but didn’t have the chance to apply it in the real world. So I think I can either develop an app, or I can find an internship to use my technique skills. Also I think the volunteer work will give me some sense about how the research project is done. Do you think it is a valuable EC?
Yes, it is a valuable EC as long as it is something you are interested in doing.
