i may have posted this before… actually lost my previous id… forgot it (embarrased) i wanted to know if any of these would count as a hook
-i started an organisation in my home country to promote education and this year for literacy day, we asked the govt to take out a stamp for education and after 2-3 mths they finally agreed, so we will be very involved
-i am the director in another organisation and worked to form a partnership between UNIFEM (for women) and that organisation and i am the person for both of them
i will also intern and assist a UN project this august and probably continue for it.
my biggest passion is humanitarian work… anywhere and i am really big on promoting education for various reasons… but i am a bit worried that since my activities are unconventional… no adcom will really recognise them
thanks for your help

I think that's a fantastic hook, especially if you want to go into an int'l relations or other social science field. Your experience, in my opinion, shows initiative, leadership, passion, and dedication. What is your home country? Will you be an int'l app?

it is very rare to snag a real internship with the UN. i don't know how big of a hook it may be, but the vast majority of applicants in high school can't say they've done the same thing.

i'm curious to know as to how you've got the internship and what kind of tasks are you doing. can you please send me a PM? thanks

it actually is not really really difficult..since i did some work in my native country, the UN there was aware of this, and so when i applied for a summer month long internship here, i wrote an essay and clearly highlighted what i would bring and what my plans were for here.. and i told them i was ready to do any work.. even something that was tiny..because i wanted it so bad, as for the work i wrote about AIDS in really poor almost unknown regions where there is strong stigma and no knowledge about AIDS and the second thing was education in countries like afghanistan and pakistan where children wont turn to terrorism if they went to school and learnt to open their minds and better their lives. so they assign you to anyone one of their on going projects, its actually really cool, because you do have some say, i know someone who has done this before, and he loved it. as for the real internship- where you work on high profile things, you have to be a college student.
i am not doing any of this for college admissions, this is what means the most to me and this what i do best, but my only worry is that i have been so involved with this that i dont have any of the musical or athletic talents that most other people have

Hey there .... Sounds pretty good to me but make sure you put it across really nicely on your application ... i had done something way greater than that but couldn't put it across to well so kinda missed out [ I along with 7 others from India went over to istanbul turkey in 2001 for the world parliament of children and successfully drafted a number of resolution pertaining to the ' Rights of Children ' which was formally inaugrated by Mrs. Nane Annan herself. and yea if was a huge global event showcased on 14 multinational tv networks over 114 nations... ]
