Feel free to discuss in terms of strength of academic programs, overall undergraduate experience, and anything else.

I'm interested to hear what people have to say.

nope. it's perfect.

lol

better than harvard and princeton :D

nah harvard is overrated :D

That's a really subjective question and definitely varies by person.

As a freshman at Yale I can say with certainty that Yale is NOT overrated. We all know that Yale is strong academically. No one can deny that. And no one can deny that there are tons of other schools that you can receive an amazing education from. But the thing that really makes Yale special is the vibrancy of the campus. The people here aren't just amazingly creative and brilliant in the classroom; their strengths translate into everything else they do. This means that they'll go out of their way to plan that awesome masquerade ball or the Darth Vader flash mob in between classes. They're willing to put in the time to make that film that they've been talking about or to found a semi-secret historical society that explores campus secrets at night. Life at Yale is never boring. And plus the network that you create at Yale is amazing. The school really works to try to put you in contact with great minds and very helpful alumni... I love Yale.

GASP how dare you say such a thing?!

jk but seriously, it's awesome! I'm in love with absolutely everything about it!

But what about Yale as a whole university, grad programs and all? Some love to claim that Yale lags behind HPS in a number of academic fields, yet its overall reputation and prestige somehow remains towards the top.

Because it's the experience and relationships you make, not the pretty things you can put down on your resumes.

Because it is the journey, not the destination.

:]

Maybe, but we're not going to any of the grad schools (at least right now) are we? Yale does tend to push the fact that it primarily is an undergraduate institution. Yeah, Harvard Grad Schools tend to be among the best in the nation, but if that means the top professors are too busy teaching grad students, what does that do for me?

You should be looking for a top-notch undergraduate experience, not a university whose prestige is based things that you won't even come in contact with as an undergrad.

I'm just interested in all opinions, positive and negative. (I'm a Yale student btw.)

If Yale was overrated i think it'd have more posts than Princeton/Harvard on cc (which it doesn't and this suprises me since its EA time).

Well, overall, I don't think any of us can really speak about whether Yale as an institution is overrated. That needs some deep digging into all the grad schools, the research, the hospitals, etc. I know that the Graduate School of the Arts is basically the place to be for graduate arts education in the US (though there has been some controversy in and around the school this past year).

yale law is da best :D

So, granted, I am a freshman at Yale, but in my completely unbiased opinion, Yale is anything but overrated. I've had absolutely no complaints since I got here.

Just an example of how awesome Yale is, my roommate is in Freshman Organic Chemistry and today a Nobel Laureate walked into his chem class and gave a talk. Afterward, all the students got to go up and meet him. Pretty sweet. The full story is here:

^^ Yes, and that particular Nobel Laureate, Barry Sharpless, is/has been an actual professor at Stanford and MIT.
