Is your predicted major significant in college admissions?

I know this may sound like a dumb question... but do colleges factor your predicted major into admissions? I.e. if your asian and you want to major in math or pre-med or something.

It may matter if you apply to a specific college within a university.

Well I heard that if you say you want to major in something real obscure with no competition, then your chances for acceptance is greater. True?

It depends what the school is known for. I’m pretty sure if you wanted to study Russian Literature at MIT, you might just be a little more likely to get in than the guy that says he wants to study XYZ Engineering.

Yes, Borb’s right.
However for some colleges, they just admit students irrespective of their majors. In such colleges, people usually declare their majors in their sophomore year.

It only matters if you actually have ECs that show you’re actually passionate about that major. Otherwise, they would probably assume that you’re just putting down something obscure to increase your chances. Plus, pretty much everyone switches majors. Someone that show actual interest would probably be likely to do so.

Ok take it from me, i go to a school where we JUST tested this out with last years class and my class. Both classes smart and similar stats. My class put down less competitive majors like religious studies, or comp lit, or Russian, or something of that nature and WE ALL got accepted to good universities. ALL OF US, while last years class did not. keep in mind how much more competitive this year was! Also, someone said before if you put something random down that does not seem like it fits in then choose something random that has a slight connection. you can make the connection yourself in your essays and in your additional comments that every app has for you to use: USE THAT SPACE, i cannot stress that enough!!
