Is your PSAT score a good indicator of your SAT score?

If I got a 220 on my PSATs as a sophomore, what do you think I will get junior year? What about on the SAT?

well i’ve talked to silverturtle and he thinks they should be around the same difficulty (for the most part, with exception to math, which doesn’t test all the Algebra II concepts the SAT I does). After taking a couple tests myself though, I’m inclined to think that the PSAT is a little easier. Maybe its just some placebo effect, but idk. I’d estimate ur SAT I score to be 2000-2200, yeah sorry for the large range lol.

I refer you to the Official Pre-PSAT thread, as silverturtle dropped by and talked about this topic.

My brother got 204 for PSAT and 1990 for SAT.

I think I got a 190 something for the PSAT, and an 1890 SAT. My ACT was a 31 though, found it much easier.

Many find the PSAT to be more manageable simply because it’s shorter.

I did far worse on my PSAT than on my SAT. Perhaps I’m just built for endurance. :)

Maybe my school isn’t that great, but a 220 PSAT would put you right near the top of the sophomore class (~600 people).

A lot of people I know tend to do poorly on the PSAT but then ace the SAT. I know a girl who didn’t make NMSF but went on to get a 2300.

It’s the best thing you got besides the actual SAT. More accurate than most practice ones.

Both grandkids did much better on the SAT. I don’t know the reason - both would have been commended for NMF - one would have had NMF score for about 36 states, the other 12. I think they took the PSAT as a “not playing for keeps” thing and the SAT as something serious. The interesting part is that, given their SAT scores, they were “playing for keeps” on the PSAT.

Most people improve slightly from the PSAT to the SAT.

I improved from my PSAT to SAT. But I took the SAT with preparation as opposed to no prep for the PSAT. If you do not prepare I would think that the scores would be similar.

My PSAT score was not a good indicator of my SAT score (300 point boost), but I did study for the SAT.

Your PSAT score will give you a general ballpark for your SAT, but cannot be used to guage your SAT performance too accurately. I barely got commended on my PSAT after months in a prep course, then went on to score a 2300+ on the SAT with four days of self preparation.

I got a 229 on my PSAT with only 1 practice test for prep. I got a 2270 on my SAT with a month of moderate prep (mostly practice tests). I think the essay is what made the difference–I have great test taking skills, but not amazing writing skills.

I did prep for PSAT and SAT, and got 210 and 2230, respectively. I think the main difference was the four months in between the two tests. Especially for math, you can learn A LOT in a few months. In fact, right after the PSAT, I learned how to do some problems that had been on the PSAT! Don’t worry about it. The SAT is just really long, so be ready for that.

I did a lot better on my SAT than my PSAT even though I did not do much more studying, so I don’t think that my PSAT was a good indicator.

this is a stupid question, but how do you study for SATs? Do you just do a lot of practice tests and memorize vocab and stuff?

holy crap, you’re amazing.

apparently the SATs test your test taking skills and your ability to solve problems logically and analytically. however, not only do the PSATs test the things that the SATs test, they also test your prior knowledge on certain topics. i personally don’t really see any difference between the two, but my SAT score was higher than my PSAT score. Almost all the seniors that i know did better on their SATs than they did on their PSATs so i would generalize that SAT scores are usually higher than PSAT scores.

don’t take my word for it though, everyone is different i guess
