ISHP vs. CHP

Could any one comment on the relative pros and cons of the ISHP with Regents at Davis vs. the CHP with Regents at Irvine? I have a hard time to decide where to go. It looks like the CHP at Irvine offers more: priority class enrollment starting from 1st quarter instead of 2nd, and 4 year housing guarantee. Is this right or it is just not important?

I intend to go to medical school. But I am admitted to the Biomedical Engineering major at Davis (which I applied for). After reading some posts, it seems that taking a Biological major for premed is easier than taking an engineering major for premed. Is this right? If so can I change major easily?

What about the premed programs at Cal, UCLA and UCSD? Is it a wise decision to choose UCD or UCI over those three? I live in NoCal.

Thanks.

There's plentiful housing in Davis... it has a 6% vacancy rate. Unlike in SoCal, it's not difficult to get pretty good housing.

And I don't think priority registration for your very first quarter would make a very big difference... I can't imagine what class you'd want in your first quarter that you couldn't get/couldn't take later.

At UCD most students develop their first quarter schedule during summer advising. Priority registration is not needed for Fall quarter, because the campus is committed to ensuring that there are enough spots in all the courses that the entering student needs. After that quarter, priority registration is great because you literally have first pick at the courses and times you want.

My son was in IS last year, and because of space in new dorms, (and the full-ride Regents scholarship) many ISers chose to stay at the dorms for the following year. There are also large apartment complexes on campus.

If you don't want to live on campus, there are tons of inexpensive rentals in town, some even just across the street from campus. Housing is definitely not an issue.

If you are premed, Davis is the place - and the IS program is great. The courses are interesting and challenging, but not too heavy in workload and excellent grades are not difficult to achieve in those classes.

Also, IS courses take care of the GEs and writing experience requirements.

If you want to go to med school your GPA is the MOST important criteria.

The Microbiology major is very popular with pre-meds, and if you are interested email me directly and I will hook you up with our Micro peer advisor - I believe he's heading to med school. Last year's microbiology peer advisor also had been in IS, and she had her choice of med schools...

UCD graduates have a very high acceptance rate to Med Schools. Students in the know, who want to go to Med School, often choose UCD over the UCs because of that.

I'm not familiar with Irvine's program - it is quite new - but UCDs IS program is well established, having been in existence for over 36years.
