Isla Vista

Can anyone tell me about Isla Vista? I was looking on the UCSB website and at other things about SB and came across some rather...disturbing articles about Isla Vista (as an example, one from their sheriffs department saying not to walk alone at night, have neighbours watch your house, people fall off cliffs and die/break their necks, and even don't park next to vans and always drive with your doors locked).

Is it actually a 'dangerous' city?

And UCSB is "next door," right?

wasn't there an accident there a few years back over Halloween where some pedestrians were killed by an out of control driver? I'm hazy on the details, but would like to know more about IV too

wow! this actually makes me feel better I was rejected. not that i have no heart for human pain.

IV is directly next door to UCSB. In fact, the campuses of UCSB sort of surrounds IV on three sides, IV's fourth side borders the Pacific. Its not really a true city, and it is small, just 2 square miles, but with a population of 20,000. The inhabitants of the area are almost all college students. It is because of this set up that UCSB has the reputation it has as far as the party school image is concern. Take a bunch of college kids who are away from home, many for the 1st time, put them on the beach that is not on campus, thus not subject to campus policy and give them freedom, things are going to happen. Nevertheless, I would not consider IV to be a dangerous area in comparing to a dangerous inner-city neighborhood (neighbors watching your house, driving with your doors locked). If the last significant incident occured in 2001 (the accident WECANDOTHIS is referring to above) then that is nothing comparing to any college that is in a major metro area, i.e. Bay Area. I would suggest just using common sense as you should at any college. But I wouldnt use IV as a determent from attending UCSB if you desire to be a student there.

The police are always going to tell you to be as safe as possible.

zimmee32, you posted a few I haven't heard before! That van thing - never heard it, don't believe it.

IV is not that scary a place. Most ucsb students live there and love it. To address a few things you mention & ask about: IV is separated from the college by a row of eucalyptus trees. It is that close. Type "isla vista, ca" into google and look at the map it displays. As for robberies, most often these happen because kids leave their doors unlocked. There is a simple solution ;) You didn't mention bike theft, BTW, also a problem at ucsb. Bikes get stolen because they're not locked; again, we have the technology to prevent it.

Regarding walking alone, there are people out and about at most reasonable hours (and even many unreasonable hours). So if you're walking home before 1am or so there are going to be be other kids out and about. It probably isn't the smartest idea for a girl to be wandering home alone at 3am, though. Stay where you are or have the guy walk you home.

As for cliffs -- it isn't as if you can be innocently walking down a sidewalk and then you plunge to your death because the ground is so unstable;) People who are drinking step over fences, step past warning signs that say "dangerous cliffs", and sometimes they fall. It's not unique to ucsb, it happens anywhere you have drinking and cliffs. A few months back the kicker for the USC football team died in Long Beach falling off a cliff. <a href="http://tinyurl.com/2gh2wj%5B/url%5D">http://tinyurl.com/2gh2wj</a></p>

The tragic incident a few years back (2001) about the kids being run over did not happen during Halloween; it was in February. Nor was it an out-of-control driver, or due to a dangerous street. It was a deranged student who deliberately ran his car into people and got out of the car saying "I am the angel of death", the kind of tragic event that could happen anywhere. In Northern CA a similar thing (driver targeting pedestrians) happened a few months ago. The ucsb driver was sent to a mental hospital. <a href="http://www.dailynexus.com/article.php?a=3376%5B/url%5D">http://www.dailynexus.com/article.php?a=3376</a></p>

Parents are usually horrified when they see IV because it looks a lot like a slum. There are winos hanging around that have probably been there for 20 years. But most students love it. If you go to ucsb then all your friends are going to be living a short walk or bike-ride away. It is one of the few CA schools where you get a real sense of a student community. It's easy to get together to study, to hang out, to attend events on campus, play intramural sports, go to one of the many food places, etc.

But ucsb (and IV) are not right for everyone, and people usually know pretty quickly. What I urge everyone to do is visit. Go and see the school, walk around IV, strike up conversations with a few kids about what they like/dislike about the place.

thx for the facts on the 01 incident..I had a senior moment on that one. You make some good points in your post.

mikemac-Thank you for that post, everything was really well put. I figured that maybe the things I was reading weren't entirely accurate, but I wanted to get the opinions of people familiar with the area.

As for the "don't park next to vans" (which I thought was hilarious, honstely!)...that came from this link:
<a href="http://www.sbsheriff.org/iv/ivsg/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.sbsheriff.org/iv/ivsg/index.html</a>.</p>

I wonder if that includes mini-vans? Haha.

Here is a link that shows the main part of Isla Vista where many students live after they move out of the dorms

Ocean-side Del Playa is where you want to be :D

And here is a link that shows ucsb-owned apartments and married student housing (the dorm Franciso Torres is at the corner of Storke and El Colegio) <a href="http://www.google.com/maps?q=Isla+Vista,+CA+93117&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=34.420611,-119.863586&spn=0.011895,0.027122&t=h&iwloc=addr%5B/url%5D">http://www.google.com/maps?q=Isla+Vista,+CA+93117&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=34.420611,-119.863586&spn=0.011895,0.027122&t=h&iwloc=addr</a></p>
