<p>In order to not be laid off, you need to be flexible. There are no guarantees in life. Where I work, we have laid off people for not performing well. We have laid off people because as business has slowed, groups have merged and there was duplication of manpower skills. We have also at times laid off mechanical engineers, other times electrical, other times optical and other times software engineers. Our product pretty much uses all types of engineers except civil. If the product mix changes somewhat, the number of a particular type of engineer needs to change and layoffs occur.</p>
