ISO college\university with dance program

My daughter is in the process of searching for a college\university. She has a strong academic background (GPA 4.6255, SAT 1 2000s, top 5 of 530, AP Scholar) with career plans in dermatology, surgery or chemical engineering. She also has a strong dance background and currently dances 3 to 5 days a week (or 10 to 15+ hours per week). She wants to maintain her dance but does not plan to major in dance. What colleges\universities have a decent dance program that allows non-dance majors to participate in the dance program? We recently Florida State does not allow non-dance majors to participate in the dance program. Also, she does not feel that participating on a dance team alone will provide the opportunity to maintain her technique.

You may also want to cross post here [Dance Major - College Confidential](Dance Major - College Confidential Forums)

Wow, your post is almost identical to one I posted last spring. The one problem we found was that many colleges with good dance programs are primarily for majors only. We did find a few that allowed non dance majors to take classes and participate. Some of the schools we liked that encouraged non dance majors to take classes and even particpate in dance clubs were St. Olaf, Franklin & Marshall, Elon, and Kenyon. I also heard that Skidmore and Muhlenberg fall into this category but we have not visited them. These are all LAC’s.

Another issue with the college teams that dance at football/basketball games is that many choose looks over dance ability. I’m not implying that your D is not gorgeous, but many are going for a “Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders” look. Our studio’s strongest dancer did not make her school’s dance team…she’s lovely but not tanned or buxom…girls who could barely do doubles (but who had the “look”) made the team.

Vassar has no dance major, but does have a strong dance program with teachers from ABT (and a brand new dance building). Barnard has a strong dance program in which non-majors can participate (as can Columbia students).

Muhlenberg also has a very strong dance program, and allows non-majors to dance as much as they want. It also has a strong tap program, which seems to be unusual, as well as programs in ballet, modern and jazz.

Watching the Big Ten Station, University of Iowa has a top dance program, not sure if it meets what your looking for: non major etc…

Muhlenberg sounds like a great match as she thought she would probably lose the opportunity to continue to tap. She is need of new tap shoes but have refused to buy a new pair as I was thinking this was her last year. I even said I would duct tape them if necessary (lol). She will probably add Muhlenberg to the list in hopes of at least getting new tap shoes.

thanks again for all replies.

Wisconsin has a top 5 Chem E program and a very good dance program that allows non majors.

My daughter is also interested in continuing dance without majoring in it. Here are some schools we found which look like they might allow this: Beloit, Bowdoin, Brown, Carleton, Connecticut, Macalester, Middlebury, Pomona.

Also, just found out about this site today: [Dance Magazine](Introducing Kansas City Ballet II). Not sure if it will help or not.
