Hi, I was planning on applying to UCLA, and have attended a several colleges. I would like to leave Santa Monica College out because i have received a bad grade at that school. I do not need the credit from that school, but my question is, if I apply to UCLA and i do not put Santa Monica College as one of the schools i attended, will they find out? Please help this is really killing me.

Per the UC application, yes, you are required to list all prior colleges / schools attended and coursework completed. In fact, if the university finds out that you failed to list all required information, your admission may be revoked. Save yourself the additional stress and just be honest.

I understand how reporting one poor grade makes you nervous but try to explain the circumstances for why you did poorly in this one class in your personal statement, and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Good luck and remember that you are considered based on the totality of your application and overall GPA, not just one course.

What's a "bad grade?" A B? A C?

To me, bad grades are Bs

UCBorUCLA,

Man, you'd hate to see the record of some people I know at top grad schools! :o

I highly recommend against lying by omission. It's really, really not worth it yo.

Own the "bad grade" and accept responsibility and hope that it won't affect your chances. Seeing as though it's a bad grade, and not bad gradeS, I don't think it'll be a huge factor. It's certainly not worth having your admission revoked if/when they find out.

If you lie then you could be denying someone with a better application the spot you gain, if omiting the grade is the reason you get in over them. Just something to think about.

The grade i got was a D, so i am able to do it again.

So if i got a "D" and I make that up and get an "A" how does that look, if i am applying to UCLA doesnt that look really bad?

If you have the opportunity to retake the class and get an A, absolutely do so. This will show that you have the ability to produce top level work and that you took the initiative to show you can do so. Again, if this D is the only below average grade you've received, you'll be fine. You may want to explain it, though, in your personal statement if it was recent so the admissions folks have a context for this one grade.

right, I had a horrible first semester(2.0) but have turned everything around and had above a 3.5 each semester since. So if you show that you are able to find a way to get better, and also write about it in your personal statement, you will greatly improve your chances.
