I am a freshman and general bio major. When I went to orientation I was advised to take CHEM 6AH (I got a 5 on AP Chem so I wouldn't get credit for 6A). Today freshman registration started and literally 2/3 of the class filled up; there are only 17 seats left. I'm nervous, and feeling pretty certain I won't be able to get in because I don't register until the 3rd!

From what I can tell, the 6AH series is on a yearly cycle, so if I miss this class I'm set back a year in chemistry. If I don't get the class, should I start the physics series this year instead of next year (opposite of the 4 year plan)? Or take an upper div class for my major? Can someone give me some advice?

um, you don’t need 6AH for your major. or GEs. or the MCAT. or med school. it’s terrific if you want to know the math/physics behind chemical principles, but pretty much worthless for everything else. and no, “honors” does NOT count for that much more with graduate school.

why don’t you just skip ahead to organic chemistry? i’ve never heard of anyone with a “5” deciding to skip around and repeat general chemistry, even if it is labeled with a pretty “honors”

I’m also in the same boat. Astrina, as far as I know, for med school you need a year of inorganic chem ehichcan be fulfilled by either chem 6 series or the honors series. and since we can’t get credit for the 6 series since we got 5s on the ap test, don’t we have to take the honors series to meet the requirement?

Also I’ve read that 10 % of math and science classes drop out but is that true of honors as well?

@ngstar3125 - no. med schools want to see the grade, which you’ll get even if you receive credit. most folks achieve this by taking 6A-C in one swoop, it’s a lot easier then taking 6AH-CH for the whole year.

in 6AH, the dropout rate is higher. and in genchem, i don’t think it’s as high as 10%. maybe 5% if i had to guess.

@Fringe - the only things you have to know well are lewis structures, formal charges, and periodic trends. i started organic chemistry right after 6B and did fine.

i am in the same predicament (w/ 5 in AP CHEM and cannot register for CHEM 6AH), but i am a Chemical Engineering major, so i do need to learn the math and physics principle behind general chemistry. My course registration time is on Sept. 3rd 12 PM also arrrrggg!!!
