Issues with an email from UCLA, Need Advice

So I got an email from UCLA (like a few others have) asking me to take English 1B at my community college next quarter. This is the text of the email:

"We are in the process of reviewing your application. Before we can complete our review and reach an admission decision, we need the following information from you:

Would it be possible for you to enroll in English 1B or 1C at Foothill College for the Spring 2011? Unfortunately, we consider the Writing 140 course you took at USC a duplication of English 1A, not a substitute for Foothill's English 1B or 1C"

I took Writing 140 at USC my freshman year, and then I took English 1A at my community college my sophomore year, as according to the articulation between USC and my community college Writing 140 was the EQUIVALENT of Writing 1B. So what is the deal with UCLA claiming it is equivalent to 1A? I have evidence showing otherwise. It would be an extremely big inconvenience to take 1B over again, not to mention the quarter starts in a week or two and I already have a schedule planned. Additionally, I applied to UCLA as a transfer last year too after I had already taken both of those courses, and I DID NOT receive any sort of email resembling this one (despite being in the exact situation) before I was rejected.

They want a response within 5 days, what should I do?

PS: I also have a separate question. I have TAGed a few other schools (got into UCSC, still waiting on SD and SB) and I think that I did very poorly on my Calculus 1D Final that I just took (I'm guessing I will end up with a D in the class, very slight possibility of a C or F). Only 1 school (SD) requires this course for an econ major. My GPA will still be well over a 3.0, but this quarter I am getting a B and whatever I end up with in the math class. Will this basically screw over my admissions chances/nullify my TAG?

If I were you I would scan your “proof” and include it in your reply. Also, if you really want to get into UCLA then I would tell them yes you could take it if your proof is not acceptable.

^ By “proof” I mean I can simply go to USCs website and get the articulation agreement where it states that they are equivalent. I mean the class I took and 1B even have almost the exact same title.

Should I simply respond with my case and state that if they still are not willing to grant equivalence that I will try to get into a 1B class next quarter?

Sorry to keep bumping but here is the exact text from the USC-Foothill (my CC) articulation agreement

Any course below (or two courses, if indicated by “with”) fulfills the lower division writing requirement if completed after graduating from high school and before starting at USC. These courses are also listed in Part II as equivalent to WRIT 130, which is the same as the WRIT 140 course offered at USC.

ENGLISH 001B; 01BH; 001C; 01CH

Emphasis on the last sentence.

Explain that to UCLA in your reply, but they might still not accept the course.

Also, UCLA does not want to hear that you will “try” to take the course. Either you “plan” on taking it or you will not take it. If you “plan” on taking it and you do not, then if admitted, you could be rescinded.

^ Understood, thanks for the help.

Anyone else have input?

I agree with SMCguy.

You should email UCLA explaining that USC and your CC believe that you have completed your IGETC English 2 course with Writing 140 but you should also say that if this explanation/proof is not accepted by UCLA then you will absolutely try to add the English class at Foothill for the spring.
