So this issue is a little complicated and could be overblown but I just wanted to see if there was anything I could do about it. I'm pretty set on being an engineer (specifically Materials and want to go into alternative energy research) so I put that in my career plan, but the thing is I'm only set on it for most of the schools I'm applying to (Michigan, Stanford, UPenn, Princeton, etc.). I'm applying to Harvard as well, for the Environmental Science and Public Policy major. I've always been interested in multiple career paths, and being a policymaker/consultant in the environmental field would be just as interesting to me as being an engineer. However, I don't want to put Undecided because several of my essays focus heavily on passion for engineering and desire to be an engineer (which is all still true) and I feel like putting Undecided will come across as contradicting to these ideas. On the flip side, I don't want Harvard to read my essay about wanting to do environmental policy and then seeing my career path is engineering and think I'm duping them too. Any insight as to what I might be able to do?

I am in the same situation. I see myself becoming / studying different things at different schools. The problem with that is the career choice has to be the same for all. Honestly, I think we are over thinking the process. You can always lie and put an intended major even if it’s far from true. They don’t expect you to pick right now.

I’ve been searching the threads for some answers to this, and I think the answer lies in the fact that you can send the common app to some schools, then make changes and send it to the other schools. So you could leave the engineering path answer and send it to the engineering schools. Then, change to the environmental policy career path and send it to Harvard. It’s my understanding that you can make unlimited changes to the common app EXCEPT that the common app essay can only be revised twice (total of 3 versions). I plan to confirm this with my son’s GC.
