Hi there, First time poster long time reader. I thought i would ask my fellow TAGs to UCI for the fall of 2011 if they have had any issues with their tag application. I was put onto the waitlist rather than allowed in and I called them to see what the issue was. I assumed it had something to do with my pre reqs for my chosen major, Drama, but after reading over the old brochure I discovered I did not need to have anything done for it.

When I called admissions they told me that I had met all the requirements, but there was such a huge amount of tag students that I would not be allowed to tag in, despite having all the pre reqs done. I was wondering if anyone else has heard this or if it is their attempt at coming up with an excuse. I, in all my years at CC and friends leaving for other UC's, have never heard of anyone meeting tag requirements yet not getting in.

firefoxed, do you mind explaining what happened with your TAG?
i am planning to tag UCI or UCSD this fall but i heard that TAG is not always guaranteed admission (such as your case), so i want to make sure i have everything i need before i apply.

Hi, I’m sorry. When I heard from that counselor I was a little depressed so I didn’t say much more. So this is the breakdown.

I applied for TAG to UCI for fall of 2011. My grades aren’t super good due to mistakes I made as a fresh college student, but I brought them up to a 3.25gpa at my california CC. I tagged to both UCI and UCSD. I was rejected to SD because I had not finished my second English course by fall of 2010. I had assumed that, or my pre reqs for my major, was why I was not allowed to tag into UCI, but I guessed my grades were good enough to allow me to be wait listed. After perusing the UCI site I checked the brochure for the tag applicants and realized that I had everything that was required of a UCI tag student. I called them to ask them if there had been a mistake.

This was where I spoke to a counselor there where he informed me that “due to the high volume of TAG students for fall of 2010, we were not allowed to let all tag students who qualified to have guaranteed admission.” I was pretty upset about this since nowhere on the paperwork for tag does it say that “even if you have guaranteed admission, you are not guaranteed in.” I had read about people not getting into their majors if it was impacted, but my major is drama and it is not impacted at all at UCI plus all those people who tagged into impacted majors were still allowed to the school, they just weren’t allowed into the major of their choice.

To sum things up, pretty much because of all the people applying this semester for tag to UCI, they had to deny some tag students. I guess I just drew the short straw.

Those were my exact words to the counselor cacophonous, but he told me that there were hundreds of tags who did not get in this year. I’ll have to read more into it and exercise my rights if I can, but it seems like a lost cause.

So it’s true then. Next year, they are making it so you can only TAG to 1 school AND they are raising the GPA requirements for UC Davis and UCSD. I guess this is to ensure that TAG certified applicants are indeed Guaranteed since the applicants have to make a careful decision being able to TAG to only 1 school.

yeah EndPhase. my counselor told me in february that because so many people use tag and not end up going, that in this falls application, a student can only tag one school. i kno UCSD raised it to a 3.5 but idk if irvine raised it at all.

I heard that too kiim, but this whole situation really irks me. I am all for them making changes, but you should never have someone who meets all the requirements for TAG, gets TAG accepted, and does not get into the school. I do not like the concept of guaranteeing something that is not guaranteed.

They definitely screwed up with TAG this year. You’d think guaranteed admission meant, well, guaranteed. I was rejected even though I had a TAG (as an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major), which I found out after calling them was due to them making a mistake. They thought I’d missed one of my major prerequisites that I’d actually completed several years ago. Now I have to appeal.

Anyway, UCI isn’t supposed to be raising their GPA for TAG next year, and hopefully restricting the TAG to a single school means the UC’s will uphold their guarantee.
