ESSAY
Your essay should be no longer than 500 words.

For almost one hundred years, the Latin words, "Vires, Artes, Mores" have been the guiding philosophy behind Florida State University. Vires signifies strength of all kinds - moral, physical, and intellectual; Artes alludes to the beauty of intellectual pursuits as exemplified in skill, craft, or art; and Mores refers to character, custom, or tradition. Describe how one or more of the values embodied in these concepts are reflected in your life.

I'd say that this covers just about anything!

I'd suggest the essay is now more important than before. ;)

Much thanks for the heads up!! :)

What was the essay the year before? I remember submitting only one essay to all the Florida schools. It appears that the format has changed.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't get this essay topic. I remember writing about the oil embargo a while ago and alternative energy. If I recall correctly, it was something about picking a world issue and why it is relevant.

Yeah, I vaguely remember having four options and choosing one. Like I said, somehow my essay fit with the requirements for all Florida schools so thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

Hmm, I think it was UF who allowed us to pick from 4 possible essay topics. I don't like these subjective essays, I prefer an essay with more structure (like last years). I really suck at writing though. Does anyone know if FSU will be counting the SAT/ACT writing portions for 2009 admissions? I know UF will be, so I'm wondering if FSU will follow suit.

Yes, FSU is using the Writing score this year. They were the first to announce it. Then UF said they were. I haven't heard about UCF yet. Has anyone else?

Oh Lordy ... these college essays are practically paralyzing my d; she's so not an intuitive writer, especially these open-ended questions. She took AP Lang this year and worked her tail off and isn't absolutely petrified of writing anymore, at least she doesn't stare at a blank screen for three hours like she used to, banging her head on a keyboard going, "I can't do this." Excellent teacher, got her A and scored a 4 on the AP exam, so she's thrilled. But it's as though she hasn't spent a year writing essays because now so many of these are, essentially, tell us about yourself -- her absolute worst nightmare. Give her hundreds of pages of calc problems and she'd rather do that for her applications ... but writing personal stuff -- oh lordy ... what a summer this will be. Sigh ...

Essays are ridiculous. You need to take a course in creative writing just to squeeze by!

Hey I need help with this essay! how are you incorporating the values? Such a are you using all 3 or focusing on one?

I need help as well but at least we've started early. So far I've used all of the values and how I have used them in my life and how FSU will help enhance them.

honestly, for my essay last year, I used one I had written for a "free response" option, because I liked it so much. I really wanted to include it in my application because I felt it was a good addition, but it didn't really apply to any of the topics. So I just checked the one it was remotely closest to, and sent it on it's merry way. I got in :]

But if they're giving a topic like this, I would suggest everyone put some thought into it. I think I kinda lucked out.

gjoseph are you talking about the values separately or using them together?

I ended up using two of them using my strengths
