It makes me laugh when...

People post their stats in loosely related threads about their college of choice and then be like chance me pleeeeeeeeeeeeease. I am desperate!!!!!

Calm down. You will get into the college that you are meant to go to. Don't make things into chance threads. Everything becomes depressing and meaningless after that.

Hahaha. Chance threads are depressing, especially to people with inferior stats (that would be me!) :(

what’s depressing is anyone with a 2200+ SAT & 3.7+ UW GPA being all like “help ahhhhh IDEK who would take me!!! ! ! ! ! !!!”.
like, st fu.

Yeah, and then those people who say stuff like:

GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.2 W (REALLY HORRIBLE, i know!!)
SAT: 2190 (Embarrasing)
ECs: Nothing great… I just happen to be the captain of 3 varsity sports, president of 5 clubs, and I have over 10,000 hours of community service. I devote all of my school holidays to building houses in Africa.

I feel like a vast majority of chance threads are bored people who want to validate themselves through an online forum.

HAHAHA, the embarrassing one is the best. yeah, literally 4/5 people who make those threads are the president/captain of like 5 different things. like…how?

You mean like this?

CHANCE ME PLEASSEEEE
hey guys, im relly worrid that im not gettin in2 my top sk00ls. can u chance me, promis that ill chance back && ill be ur bestest frienndd lolz :-]

GPA: 4.0
Class Rank: 1 out of 200,000
SATs: 2400
Subject tests: 800 on every single one
APs: 5 on every single one

ECs:
Captain of every sport and club
Class president
I saved the world
I won the Nobel Prize
I did a research opportunity where I built a rocket and went to another universe
I cured cancer
I became a billionaire

I want to know the same thing. And then they also find time to get a perfect GPA and waste time on this website. How is that possible??

OMG, i’ve ACTUALLY seen this before [more or less]…

“AP Test Scores-5,5,4,5,5,5,5,5,5,4,4,5,5,5,4
…so, what do u guys think?”

well, i didn’t know that was possible, so i don’t really know what to think…-_-

I am pretty sure they “embellish” things.

I honestly don’t believe mostly all of the chances threads on this website. Which is kind of ridiculous because no one can chance you correctly if you post imaginary stats.

Many of these claims are too good to be true. “Founded a service club that offers free tutoring services to elementary school students” could actually mean “I help my little brother with his math homework when he asks for it.”

Colleges DO recognize that some people are doing way too much stuff to be telling the truth. At a Penn visit, they said that the Dean of Admissions will sometimes count up the hours that an applicant spends in a week, according to his or her application. Some kids apparently are living 300 hour weeks, not counting sleeping. There are 168 hours in a week.

There was a poster a while ago who claimed that s/he attended a private school in Massachusetts that ranked its students (so obviously not Andover or Deerfield), with a very strong foreign language program (offered 5 different languages up to AP level according to his/her claims), citing “400 people” per grade. S/he also claimed to be a tri-season varsity athlete and the president of Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society). I was a little doubtful that there would be a school offering so much, even if it was in one of the best states in the nation education-wise. Since I attend a very well-respected private school that offers only 3 languages up to AP level, two years of Chinese, and is still considered to have an “outstanding” foreign language department, there was instantly a little red flag going up in my mind.

So I went to Mu Alpha Theta’s main page, searched for all high schools in Massachusetts with a chapter, and none of the private schools listed had anything even close to 5 languages to AP level. When I checked their enrollment statistics, they were also nowhere close to 400 students per grade level.

I am inclined to believe that several items on the resume in question were fabricated, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case for more than one person on these boards.

I’m sure some people are ■■■■■■■■ the chance forums.

Even the most outstanding people I know in terms of extracurriculars do not come close to fitting this description. One Yale SCEA admit from my school (white unhooked female) played the piano for 13 years, is the co-editor-in-chief of our school newspaper, directs plays and drama productions, and is a member of varsity tennis. She’s definitely very bright, and I felt that her acceptance to Yale was well-deserved and was very happy for her. However, take a closer look at the resume I just mentioned above - that’s only 2 leadership positions total.

Whenever I see people on these boards saying that they are “class president” along with captaining two varsity sports and leading a bunch of other clubs, I immediately start to suspect them of lying.

Nooo…navyblueninja you got it all wrong!

That’s too perfect.

It more of.

DESPERATE for Harvard!!!

Ok, im hoping to get into harvard but my stats are just ok would you please CHANCE me…i’ll chance back!!

I’m Asain!

Stats are alright.

3.89 unweighted…4.33 weighted gpa.

SAT’s are sub-par

1560/1600 2360/2400 (taken once) …taking it again in January…(jan.?)

SAT II’s
US History: 780
Math I:790
MathII 800
Bio M:750
Chem: 770

I know…my scores are below but i didn’t study for them, so i think i will do better when i take them again.

7 APs by the end of senior year: 5s on English Comp, Latin Vergil, and US History, taking Physics B, Calc BC, Stats, and Euro currently.

President of the music goup, student body, and the chess and math team. Winner of the YES scholarhsip, National Science Olympiad winner (twice) and the Mandelbort Competition winner.

Captain of the varsity soccer, basketball team and manager of the hockey team. (i know…not that good)

I have over 3,000 hours of volunteer work at a soup kitchen and nursing homes.

Oh,i also forgot i’m Valedictorian.

OMG…please, i hope i get in!

lol…I kinda over exaggerated.

lol, even if they are embellished… it’s still depressing.

…

I don’t get “Chance me, I’ll chance you back”. If you were good at chancing you wouldn’t need to make your own chance thread.

^ Ditto. 10char

^And if others can’t even gauge their own chances correctly, then why do you want them to chance you?

I dunno how relavent this is, but here’s a story…

So, there’s this girl. Let’s call her Sue. She has a 7.4 GPA (out of 7.0, which is hard to attain in the first place), captain of soccer, basketball, and track, MVP of soccer and basketball, still amazing at track. (She ended up with 12 varsity letters). She was on JETS - it’s basically a science competition, and her team, of course, did stellar-ly. She’s interned at the Cleveland Clinic two summers in a row. She got a 2400 SAT in her first sitting, and was a Presidential Scholar. She doesn’t get much sleep on a day-to-day basis.

Then, there’s this boy. Let’s call him Joe. Joe has a 7.4 GPA. I don’t know very much about his summer activites, and I don’t think they were jaw-dropping fan-freaking-tastic, or else our school would have heard of them (we have 400 students total; it’s a small school). He’s really into photography though, and was the editor-in-chief of our school newspaper. He got a 2200 SAT (which, granted, isn’t bad at all).

Both are Asian. Both applied to Yale SCEA. Sue got deferred. Joe was accepted. (Sue was later accepted and got a spot on the varsity soccer team to lure her away from Harvard, but that’s besides the point). Take from that what you will.

“Some kids apparently are living 300 hour weeks, not counting sleeping. There are 168 hours in a week.”

lmao, how dumb do u have to be to mis-embellish hours? all u have to do is add up numbers, & some people can’t even do that right :|
