I liked the U, but am a little unclear about the IT program...
if i am planning on getting a B.S. from IT in mathematics, would i be spending a lot of my time within IT? How many undergrads are in IT? Would college feel smaller cuz i would be in the IT program... aka would the huge university feel be minimized a bit?
Any info would be great! thanks!

Well, I’m not in the IT program, but one of my good friends is, so I’ll give some secondhand info from what she has told me.
The IT school has about 4,500 undergrads, and from my friend’s experiences, the IT school does make you feel a little more connected and not so large because you spend a majority of your time with strictly IT kids doing discussions, study groups, etc. So it may make the campus feel smaller…however, my friend is in the chemical engineering program, so she literally spends ALL of her time in the buildings that house the majority of IT classes. Since you’re a mathematics major, I would guess that you may not be as trapped in the IT school as the other kids, just because you’re schedule probably isn’t as rigid and set as the engineering kids’ is. I could be way off though! This is just from what I’ve seen and from IT kids I’ve talked to. But even so, I think you’ll still feel the hugeness of the campus…it’s kind of hard not to unless you’re on the St.Paul campus.

Hope that helps!

At least I don’t feel too much connected to IT in my first semester here.
I have three LE courses so I am spending a lot of time on west bank.
And next semester I’ll have my last LE course and freshman writing: still not really trapped.

But I’m pretty sure I will spend the next two or three years mostly in IT buildings.

As a math major, you would have a lot of classes with other math majors, and you could additionally join the math club and the math team training to get to know people there.

Thanks! i come from a good-sized school (for North Dakota … our class size is about 500 students) so I’m just worried that the UMN might be too big… however, i’ve heard that being in various organizations help tone down the size. Is this true? or is the size really overwhelming for a while?
