I'm going to Italy in August.. for anyone who has been, what do you suggest seeing/doing/eating? [besides the tourist sites, which I already know of] Thank you!!

Italy’s a sizeable country. We have no idea where in Italy you’re going.

I’ve been to Rome/Vatican City and Venice.
In Venice, we were there when they happened to have this huge holiday, sometime around July 20th, so we sort of had our schedule made for us. There was a big party, every restaurant was completely filled, tons of boats came in, there were fireworks. Besides that, we went to the colorful island, where all the houses are painted brightly and they have black pasta, and the glass-making island, where, y’know, they make glass, which was especially neat for my sister and me since we had been into Venetian glass since our father bought us necklaces from there when we were 5 and 6 or so.

In Rome, the hotel at which we were supposed to stay, well, I guess it was full or something, so they planted us in this random apartment in the middle of the city, which turned out to be way better than any hotel could be. We were right next to a square that had a market everyday and we weren’t totally surrounded by other tourists. I mostly went around with my father on the subways and walked. We did, y’know, tourist stuff, so I don’t know what to recommend. Eat pasta carbonara, whatever you do. There are some really cute restaurants and stores near the Spanish steps. When you go to the St Peter’s Basilica, if you’re female, wear sleeves and a modest neckline or you’ll be forced to buy a way overpriced shawl.

If I went back, I would basically spend the whole time in museums, while art history is still relatively fresh in my head (when I went to London for a day in December, I spent the entire time in a museum, freaking out about everything).

Yeah, since I don’t know where you’re going idk if this applies but I’ve only been to Rome and of course did all of the touristy stuff :)

Honestly just walk around! In every country I’ve traveled to, my family and I usually just go to the main city center and walk around. You’ll usually find a lot of interesting things that aren’t on normal tourist stops like outdoor markets with the brightest tastiest fruits and vegetables you’ve ever seen, tiny but amazing gelato shops, and family pizzerias (which are INCREDIBLE!)

And yeah, for St Peters Basilica, make sure your shirt has sleeves and your shorts go down to your knees. I’m not sure about the shoes but sneakers would be safest. I saw A LOT of tourists get turned away because of their clothing and you don’t really want to miss out on what’s inside :)

Have fun!

Thanks a lot, both of you! It all sounds wonderful!

I actually am not sure where in Italy I’m going yet, haha.

I’ve solely seen pictures of it, but if you are able to, I recommend that you go to Tuscany.

I’ve actually heard that Florence is less touristy than Venice or Rome, and has the Uffizi, Gates of Paradise, il Duomo, and, I think, Botticelli frescoes.

Come here in Rome, “the eternal city”. You can visit a lot of things as you can see by photos on internet and then it was founded 2763 years ago.
