has anyone gone on the italy leadership seminar? how hard is it to get accepted? how much does the decision depend on leadership experience? (never been president of a club, etc. but am really interested in going)

well ... it says

Have progressed to at least Finalist standing in the National Merit, National Achievement or National Hispanic scholarship competitions and have been seleced out of an impressive pool of high-achieving students receiving major four-year academic scholarships from Texas A&M University.
Already have a proven track record of academic excellence and leadership achievement
Eligible students will receive information after their scholarship application has been received in the Office of Honors Programs and Academic Scholarships. View Champe Fitzhugh, Jr. International Honors Leadership Seminar Website

I went on the Italy trip before my freshman year- it was probably the best thing that I could have possibly done with my summer. You get a great group of friends (most of whom become campus leaders), learn about the MSC and different organizations on campus, build a close relationship to key Honors staff, and get to go to Italy! It would definitely be helpful to your application to have had leadership experience, but if not, just find a way to set you application apart. Show passion, ambition, vision, and a unique perspective, and you could still be chosen. Good luck!

thanks for the insight...it sounds like a great opportunity. i just finished my application and am hoping for the best!

hey I know this is from last year but I am considering going to A&M and I am a national Merit semifinalist and national Hispanic scholar.

Does anyone know if this trip is covered by TAMU or do the students on the trip have to pay for it?

Thanks.

azazaz, where did you get an app for the trip already? Did A&M send it to you? I haven't heard anything about it yet, but then I haven't decided if I am going or not. I was told it was not covered completely by A&M, that it is about $3500. But the NM lady was not too confident about that info.

When I went it cost about $2,800 for almost three weeks in Italy, including airfare, some tours, and a whole lot of nice meals (and gelato). It has probably gone up a little since then, though. And yes- they sent the application to me, but it certainly doesn't hurt to ask for it. Good luck!

I thought you had to be a NMF to get invited, but azazaz said he already had an app for it. Did you get the app after you had committed? I have not yet decided if I am going to choose A&M or not....

bandnerd - if you're not going to A&M, I suggest you change your screen name, lol.

Hmm.... I'm trying to remember. I know I decided on my official yes and nos in May, but I applied for Lechner housing before April (it fills up quickly). So I'm not sure if I said yes at that point with the intention of canceling if I changed my mind, or not. I can't imagine they would let me apply for housing before I had said yes... But it was most definitely no earlier than late March. I'll ask my mom when I get the chance- she'd remember.

OK- I looked it up in my email, and found that they initially sent out the applications around March 30ish. It requires an essay, a resume and an application card. They are sent out automatically to anyone is a finalist in National Merit, Hispanic, or Achievement and that has been offered a four year scholarship. You then find out if you are accepted in early May/late April. Azazaz apparently had an app because when he posted it, it was April of last year. :-) Hope this helps!
