Ithaca college

so I visited Syracuse, my old #1, and I was not at all thrilled when I left. It was a nasty day out...which added a lot of blah to the trip, but the campus seemed too big for me, and everyone seemed to be in a bad mood. The school was huge and i felt lost almost. The interview was ok...who knows. I did like the fact that they had a school of socail work and those kinds of fields. As of now, Ithaca and Rochester are at the top of my lsit
Im visiting Binghamton and Colgate tom.
what do u guys think of those?

Hands down- Colgate and Rochester have better reputations than Ithaca or Bing- but they are all fine schools. Rochester was always high on my d's list. We really liked the campus- atmosphere etc. and Rochester is pretty generous with merit aid. If you are a top student, U of R often gives around $10,000 in aid. We never considered Colgate as it was a bit too small for my d's taste. Visit the campuses, you'll probably have your own opinion at the end of the day. Let us know how it went. I am also going to add- if you like the school- you gotta apply because you'll never know about financial aid until they process the application. We just had a very pleasant surprise for d # 2. She just got an acceptance to U of Tampa and was offered $8,000/ year Dean's scholarship. I never expected to get that much in scholarship $- so we're giving more consideration to Tampa than we did a few days ago. Some of the schools you are applying to are pretty generous with aid --so apply and see what is offered. Good luck

Marny, Congratulations on your D's acceptance and scholarship!! That takes the edge off of the process!

Yes, congrats!

I brought my father to Ithaca, to see if he was as thrilled with it as I was...and he admitted it was a nice campus and cute....but u can still tell he is not happy that I love it. Money and education are at the top of his priorities, while for me those are a close tie for second to me being in lvoe with the campus and feeling comfertable. Who knows. We went to binghamton..and its seems liek a great education, its a bit big..a lil overwhelming...but for the price and education I was impressed.. I was the only kid from out of state of about 30 kids who were in my group.. So the speaker kept making note of me, like Well the Chicagoan likes our prices. I asked him if it would help me in becoming admitted to the management program (their most competitive) and he told me yes..."we are activly looking for out of staters" hahaha..so maybe thats a yes?

I read your posts at SUNY Bing , Ithaca , Syracuse & U of R with interest . You are wise to eliminate Syracuse if you don't like big campuses ( although it's a fine school ) . I know you liked the freindliness of Ithaca ; did you do any overnight at SUNY Bing or get a feeling about the general atmosphere of the campus . Is it a commuter campus ??

We like U of R the best too . Hard decision but aid will decide.

Re: Syracuse- under the alphabetical listing of colleges I posted with a title, "So What Is Syracuse Really Like"-or something similar. A student, Anarchy, was kind enough to answer. Many of you might be interesting in reading it. Also, Taxguy had posted his review of the school after touring, and his D, I believe, went to summer school there while in hs.

SUNY Binghamton is very popular with LI kids. and it's probably around a 3-4 hour drive home. I believe most kids stay up there on week-ends. I have never heard it referred to as a commuter school. Most kids I know who go to Bing. stay at Bing on week-ends.

If you're interested in a nice, cute campus it's hard to beat Colgate. Gorgeous and the town of Hamilton is quite picturesque. The alumni network is very strong in terms of jobs in the business world afterwards. Not too far from Ithaca either. Certainly your parents would be happier with the academic reputation of the school than Syracuse, Ithaca etc. My D is a freshman there and although the student body is quite intelligent there is none of the over competitiveness that Cornell has a reputation for (which I am not saying it deserves, just has).

Yea, I was looking very strongly at both Colgate and Hamilton, but I am almost certain that I would not get it, I am way below their SAT range. I would not say way below, but low enough to make me think twice about applying. I know everyone says that I should just apply for the heck of it, but in a lot of ways it is hard work, and in the end, the money is a factor I will need to take into strong consideration, and both Colgate and Hamilton are quite expensive, I am not saying however Syracuse and U of R are not....

also, I never did an over night stay at Bing, but i feel now looking back on the experience that maybe it is not the right fit for me. I have been hearing a lot of different views about it. It is for sure a large state school, with mostly in state residence, which in my case could be a good or bad thing. i was surprised to find out that they only have about a 60% live on campus rate, correct me if I am wrong. It was really nothing special, but the price sure was.

I find myself still thinking about Ithaca, a lot because I have people I know there, and it seems like the perfect transition for me. My family being 20 min away from it is also so appealing. I just wish there were more good things to be said of it than mediocre ones...I loved it. People speak of "u know its right" and i know its right except that everyone i know says its not right for me.
I am also terrified I will not get into U of Rochester...

Well, Lulubelle, I haven't seen anything in this thread about your grades and stats, but you were talking early on about Cornell, and I would imagine that if you have a shot there you certainly have a shot at Colgate. URI I believe also has high standards, so unless there's more (or rather less!) I wouldn't rule out Colgate. Plus 'Gate is supposed to be pretty generous with financial aid (though I can't say for sure 'cause we didn't apply). You also mentioned someplace that you have an interest in education. Although Colgate is nominally a University, it's really an LAC which gives some limited post graduate degrees. The one it's most known for is education. I seem to recall that if you put in an online app it's free, so....... If you don't get in or don't get enough fin aid, you can always go to Ithaca, but why limit yourself at the outset? Especially since you seem to feel you may be shortchanging yourself.

Another choice in the area might be Wells, which until last year was an all womens college but began accepting men. They are quite generous in aid to high caliber students.

Hi again. Good call on Wells. My older d is at Cornell and is thinking about a Study Abroad Program through Wells so I have been on the Wells website recently. There tuition is quite reasonable for a private U. and as MHC noted, they did go co-ed this year. Also Wells kids can take some courses at Cornell, but I do not know if it is limited by major. When visiting d at Cornell I noticed a Wells van, so I do know they make arrangements for students to get from one campus to another. I do not know much more about the school, but it is worth checking out their website. PS. One of my co-workers is a graduate of Wells and speaks very highly of her experience. Also I do not think Colgate or Hamilton are going to be much easier to get into than Rochester. and I would think Hamilton is easier than U of R.

Well my stats are this: I have attended a college prep school for 4 years. Ihave maintained a 4.7 through APS and all honors. My scores are a little low, 610 verbal and 590 math, with a 570 writing. 25 act. I feel that I should be at a school such as Cornell and Colgate, but in reality, they may not see me as a great canidate. My recs are amazing, my leadership and ecs are very solid also. I am extreemly confident in my essays also, so if these schools can look past my 1200, I would have a good shot.

what are some other schools similar in size as Rochester, that are as solid, or that maybe would be a better option for me and my low scores :(
