My son loves Ithaca College which we just visited (July 2010). Everyone says, "He's got to visit in the winter!" My son loves to play in snow (sled, snowball fights, snowboard) as much as he loves to play golf in temperate winter weather of North Carolina region and south. People say it's not just the snow, but that 'it's so gray!' What's the real scoop on Ithaca weather?

I have not been to Ithaca in the winter, but the summers are very humid with heavy rain several times a week. (I got into a habit of carrying a big umbrella with me every day, regardless of what the forecast said.) The winters must be terribly foggy and cloudy if there’s similar supply of moisture.

The link below has some interesting numbers. It appears that Ithaca gets about 100 inches of snow each year (compare that to 8 inches in Raleigh, NC) with some precipitation 60% of the days. The sky is “partly cloudy” practically every day (90-95% of days) in the winter.

If your son loves snow, I don’t see what the problem is. But, yes, I do agree, sometimes the sky is kinda grey and its kinda depressing. I think it starts snowing around October-November and continues into about March, so not until April when schools about over does it get sunnier. Is he a senior now? You guys can visit again in November-ish before deciding.

I live an hour away from Ithaca, so I know the weather. It starts to snow in November and continues until about march. It is kinda grey but it’s not that depressing to me, but I have lived in NY my whole life.
The temperature is in the 60-70 range in April and by may it starts to heat up. Sometimes it gets hotter earlier.
I hoped this helped.

Yeah the sky does get pretty grey in the winter, but that’s pretty much how it the majority of the northeast is in the winter
