Is there a lot of fun things to do in Ithaca?

Are there*

Yes! Ithaca is broadly considered one of the top college towns in America. Students at Cornell and Ithaca College comprise fully half of Ithaca’s population during the academic year. It is a town geared towards students. Outdoor activities abound, with several state parks nearby. The physical beauty is stunning, as the landscape features waterfalls and gorges. Many of the vistas are breathtaking. There are some very good restaurants [more restaurants per capita than NYC]. Several wineries are within a short drive. Cornell gets many interesting speakers and top performers to visit. Ithaca has a distinctive, intoxicating vibe. Come and visit to experience it! Many townies are former Cornell students who chose never to leave Ithaca.

What is the best way for a student to travel from the Chicago area? How long would it take?

Ace, not sure if this is the best way, but you could fly to Syracuse and take a taxi/share a van [bout a 75 minute drive to Cornell].

There are plenty of outdoor activities, but Ithaca is cold during most of the school year anyway. And if you don’t have a car, don’t count on getting anywhere distant from campus very easily. Yes, there are buses; but the lines that don’t touch campus will typically not run more than once an hour. Most of your activities will be on the Cornell campus, especially as a freshman, but don’t hesitate to get to know the various parts of the city of Ithaca. That’ll put you a step up on most students in the bubble.
