Well I got rejected by Rice recently, which many people say is on par with Duke as far as selectivity so I'm really worried about Duke now. These are just some basics, what do you think could've gone wrong with Rice that may hurt me with Duke too?

Major: Electrical Engineering

Stats:
Rank: 70/807
SAT: 2300 (M:800 V: 740 W: 760)
SAT IIs: (Math IIC: 720 Physics: 710 Literature: 700)
AP's: Calc AB (5) Stats (3) English Lang (5) World History (5)

Subjective:
Courseload: 7 AP's total this year. Always picked toughest possible.
Essays: Pretty good. Not my best work ever, but I did put in alot of effort
Teacher Recs: Pretty good I'm assuming
Counselor Rec: Good
Interview: I think it went extremely well
Hook (if any): attended Duke TIP

Location/Person:
State or Country: Texas
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

Wow, I can't believe you got rejected by Rice. It is its loss. What's your GPA? Although you have nice stats, Duke seems a reach for you as it is for everybody else. Good luck!

I dont' care at all about Rice's rejection. One of my friends last year got into Yale and MiT but got rejected by Rice. Not saying I could get into those schools, but you get my point. Rice likes playing the admissions game and such. As for my GPA, our school weights really odd so I don't if it would help you much but it's about a 98 weighted.

maybe you didn't have many good ECs? Your SAT IIs are alright, but for an engineering major, it's possible Rice probably wanted to see higher SAT Math level 2 scores, especially considering the dismal percentile a 720 carries.

For Duke, applying as an engineering major, the 720 Math/710 Physics might be your weakest point. What happened man?

I didn't prepare for either. I didn't know Physics was going to have electricity/thermo random stuff like that on it. I figured Math was going to be similar to SAT I math.

Well, I got into Pratt ED with a 730 MathIIC SAT II and a 2300. I had AB and USH 5s and no other APs applying, and no Physics SATII. I don't think a low MathIIC is the end of the world. An engineering professor there told us that they were going to start putting more weight on the essays than they had in the past. Just a thought.

Rice is completely arbitrary in their admisssions. My HS (in Houston) usually sends 8 or 9 students, but i think that only one got in early out of about 7 applicants. They are trying to bring in more out of state students (I think the school is almost 50% Texans) at the expense of good in-state kids.

wow rice rejected u??? well if that's so, i dont think you will be able to get into Duke RD

Don't listen to this person. Using other school's decisions as a gauge for admissions chances is dumb. My friend who was rejected by John Hopkins and got into Princeton is proof of that.

Thanks for all your input guys. I'd like to maintain a positive outlook, but then I realize there are 19,000+ applicants competing for less than 2000 spaces....the chances don't seem to weigh in my favor.

im sure there are always these things happening, but the frequency of such events is very rare...

And you know this, how?

Look, some schools are notoriously fickle/odd when it comes to admissions. Columbia and WashU are two well-known examples. It's very possible that Rice is similar, and in any case, you'll always get a better idea of his chances from looking at someone's stats rather than admissions decisions from another school.
