'It's always sunny in Philadelphia'... But is it safe?

Hi guys. I am really happy with my acceptance to Drexel and if I get the Global scholarship, I will most likely attend.
I love love love the university and all the facilities the city provides but my only concern is safety. I live in a relatively small town wih population of 60 thousand and pretty safe as a whole. This summer I visited the United States for the first time in my life.
I went to Philly for a few days... And.. well... Dunno if there is a way I could explain my experience. Never ever felt like that before. I was literally ASTONISHED, ENTHRALLED and TERRIFIED at the same time... Such a beautiful city.. But so unsafe, at least I felt that way. Maybe it was due to the fact that I had never visited a city with more than 1 million before, or it may have been the thought I was 6000 miles away from home, but still....Washington DC appeared safer to me.
Now that I've read awful articles on the matter of safety in Philadelphia, I'm really confused with it. But I want to attend Drexel and I will (if I get enough aid).
So my question is..mostly to Philly residents.. Is Philadelphia generally safe for students...at daytime.. say for a walk near the university/at the downtown, at the park....?

What do you mean “But so unsafe”? Where were you that made you feel that way? Philly is no different than other large cities. The area around Drexel & Penn is very safe. If you choose to run around at night in west Philly acting stupid you might have a problem. Other than that you’ll be fine.

Agree- might not want to walk around by yourself late at night, but other than that just use your common sense.

I agree with the other posters, except on the “very safe” area around Penn and Drexel. It’s safe, just not very.

I live about 30 minutes away from Philadelphia, and I will tell you I do not feel comfortable there. Actually, I despise the city.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

Of course no going out at night. Talking about random walks at the downtown, parks…
Thanks, enotramsolleh :)

“So unsafe”? Where were you? Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in America, with people comes crime. However, I in fact feel safer walking around here at night by myself than I do walking around at night alone at home (I’m from the suburbs of Maryland). I cannot stress enough how important it is to just not be an idiot. You’ve gotten into Drexel, you’re clearly intelligent - don’t walk alone long distances at night, don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave expensive stuff out and you’ll be fine.

The presence of PSOs (public safety officers) is plentiful and the walking escort service will walk you to/from anywhere on Drexel’s campus (including the train station) and if you’ve gone out of Drexel’s boundaries, you can certainly call Penn’s.

University City is the safest part of Philly. If you go to Drexel, you’re not likely to be assaulted or anything unless you go out of your way to do so.

Both universities have good security measures in place; if they didn’t, their reputation would be ruined, especially UPenn.
