Its been a while..I need some suggestions

I took the SATs, and my score was pretty low. I got a 1500 (new SAT) and if you take the new writing part out its basically a 950. Since I did 2 years of H.S. out of the country and studied in spanish my average is low. My average is about a 78-79. Thing is, im in my senior year, and my first marking period was ranged from 84-99 and my second marking period grades range from 90-95. SO ive improved. Im also in the Key Club, in track and volleyball, the band and countless other activities. Ive only officially applied to Rutgers. I applied as an EOF student. Here is my whole college list:

Rutgers
Temple
Seton Hall
Kean
William Paterson
Five Towns
Hofstra
University Of New Haven

Im kind of discouraged with my gpa (2.4-2.5?) but I suppose ONE of these colleges has to accept me. Any suggestions? Should i finish all my applications with my current SAT scores? Ive only taken the SATs once. Should I take em again? Since most applications are due in Feb, I would have to indicate in my applications that im retaking the SATS right? Any advice, suggestions?

I think my essay is really good and I have a lot of reccomendation letters. My intended major is Broadcast Journalism or Music Business (If i end up going to Five Towns, UNH or Hofstra).

Since im a black hispanic, maybe applying to a school with a low # of minorities might help me out? Like Ithaca? Im also looking into Howard University. Any other good schools in the Washington DC area? I dont have a computer at the moment so forgive me ive im asking too many questions at once. Im a be online tomorrow to check back. Thanks a million in advance.

I think you have a realistic list. I might add Rider College and Susquehanna U, two schools with good communications programs, where your minority status might overcome your GPA. Howard is another good choice. Good luck!

/quit

Whatever happened to Rider, Rampo, and Rowan University, Santo?
You seemed pretty interested on them before...

Also, which schools have you applied to already? Did you do any of the January apps?

Ive only applied to Rutgers (new brunswick) and it was because they came to my school and I applied right there for free as an EOF student.

I will start applying to all the other schools from now to mid january and hopefully finish all my applications before January 28th, which is when I take the SATs again.

Cre8tive, I figured that since my gpa isnt all that good and my sats scores werent al that high, that rider, ramapo and rowan would be reaches for me.

P.S. Have you finalized your list yet? Where have u applied?

I was accepted early decision at Amherst College, but my list before I chucked it out the window was:

Amherst College
Colgate
Emory
Tufts
Bucknell
Cornell (I&LR)
University of Richmond
Dickinson, Drew, & Arcadia were my safeties

But enough about me, on to YOU!

1st) What do you mean Rider's a reach? Santo, you're stats nearly mirror that of Rider's, and they have an 85% acceptance rate. Rider is a match/safety for you.

2nd) Ramapo is not unattainable, you're in the 25th percentile of accepted students and you're in state....you'll be fine, slight reach, but you can do it with a superb essay and some good recs

3rd) Rowan is about the same selectivity as Ramapo, though you have a slightly higher chance of getting accepted into Rowan.

4th) If you can get into Kean, then you can get into Montclair

5th) If you can do Rutgers and Temple (Out of State), then I'd would give Ramapo or Rowan a try, but I'm telling you that you're applying to Rider, no buts!

I think Rowan and Hofstra are going to be tough. I agree with creative about Rider. Susquehanna is sat optional, if you take Carolyn's suggestion. If you want to try a Catholic school you might look at Manhattan College, or Le Moyne (in Syracuse). I have heard that Rowan loves the 1200+ sat score (not including writing), but apply as a reach. From what I have been reading about Hofstra, the last year or two they are really becoming a little more selective- another reasonable reach though.

Oops, one more thing...I want you to look at Drexel University, they have a well put together Music Business program that combines music theory, business management, marketing, and technology with a co-op program, similar to Northeastern's, that gives you hands on experience in the music industry either with the school's independent label or businesses in Philadelphia.

Deadline for Drexel is March 1st and if you apply only, it's free.
You'd be interested in the Westphal College of Media, Art, & Design:
<a href="http://www.drexel.edu/academics/comad/%5B/url%5D">http://www.drexel.edu/academics/comad/</a></p>

It can be a bit competitive and requires a small portfolio, but you're stats are good enough foundation for you to get in, so long as you have a good portfolio, which I can talk to you more about if you're interested.

Otherwise, you can apply straight to the Drexel College of Arts & Sciences, where you can major in Communications and then you can have a Music Industry minor.

I think you should go here(<a href="http://deptapp1.drexel.edu/em/ugrad/index.aspx%5B/url%5D">http://deptapp1.drexel.edu/em/ugrad/index.aspx</a>) now and request more information. Under areas of study highlight 1)Music Industry & 2)Communications. Also make sure to check the Philadephia, Drexel Co-op, and Academics "info boxes".

Drexel should be a great match for you, good school. Overall, I think you'll be pleased.

Edit, I forgot chances...
Drexel University can seem competitive, which is partially true. Your stats don't have to be too high if you're applying to the College of Arts & Science, that is where you have a shot getting in.

The Engineering programs (which buffers up the SAT average) and the Westphal College (media & arts) are the competitive programs. You'll have difficulty getting into. You'll need a solid portfolio piece to get in (PM me about that). The way they keep the credibility of that program running is by being selective so it doesn't take the same dive that some of Berklee College's program took.

...but if you don't have anything to show for your music sample at this point and are really just started looking, Senior year, into a possible career in music business, then I wouldn't bother applying for Westphal, that'd be a big reach. I would just apply to the main college, to pursue journalism and take a minor in music business.

Wow thanks for all the info. And thanks for leading me to Rider. Im definately applying there.

Ive never really been interested in Ramapo. Their Journalism program doesnt really interest me. And Rowan is a big reach, so i rather just let Rutgers be my NJ reach school.

So Kean isn't THAT selective? How about William Paterson and Seton Hall? What If I apply through the EOF program at some of these schools. I qualify.

As far as Hofstra goes, Ive checked it out and their music business program looks good. Everyone I know is applying there and I liike the college campus. Take note that im taking the SATs again and im really preparing for it this time, but even so, is it too much of a reach? I dont want to waste money on applications that are a bit unrealistic with my stats.

Northeastmom, what do you mean by a Catholic College?

I forgot to mention that I was already looking into applying to Drexel. I requested information a couple of days ago. Their music business/industry program looks really good as well as their co-op. But is it that competitive to get into? The site says:

*
The Music Industry Program provides a practical, hands-on educational approach to the business of music. Divided into the three core areas of music, music industry, and general education, students achieve a well-rounded education that incorporates the business and technology side of their future profession. Students may specialize in either Music Business and Law or Music Technology and Production.

Because of the multi-disciplinary nature of Drexel's Music Industry program, an audition is not required for admission (though many students are practicing musicians). Each student receives hands-on instruction utilizing the latest equipment in recording studios and computer labs. The unique opportunity to work in the field through the co-op program offers invaluable real-world experience. In addition, each student spends time working with Drexel's recording label, MAD Dragon Records, to produce and market recordings throughout their tenure.

Due to limited space, only first-time, full-time freshmen who have graduated from high school in the same calendar year are eligible to enroll in fall. Students who have enrolled at another institution are considered transfer students and are not eligible for entrance into the program.*

U sure I would need a portfolio? The only background I have is that Ive been playing piano since I was 9, have made a couple of beats and im in my school's band and advanced singing group. I also promote for a popular music club in NY. Other than that...

I would like for Music Business to be my major and Journalism my minor, but if its a lot harder to apply this way, I guess id have to major in Journalism and minor in Music Biz.

A portfolio piece is an application requirement, go look at application requirements for Westphal College.

Also your reach right now isn't Rutgers, its Hofstra and then Temple and Rutgers tied at a close second with Rowan following, if you like Rowan then keep it, you have a shot.

Hofstra is not too much of a reach if you can bump up the score a bit, but even without a increase, you still have a chance. You better not drop Hofstra, all kids should have a reach.

Wait...so Drexel would basically be another reach school, not neccessarily a match, right? I dont want to apply to too many reaches. 2 at the most. I dont need 4 reaches on my list u know what i mean? A school like Rider in which I actually have a shot at getting in is the type of school Id like to apply to.

Out of topic: U know anything about Howard, Manhattan or Manhattanville college?

No Drexel would not be another reach, it's a perfect match for you, the main college would be a match. The only competitiveness for Westphal comes from the music sample, but you can apply to both. but the College of A%S should be a match.
