It's December 1st

To clarify, my twin was deferred. My previous post-to me- sounded like I said she was denied. By the way, W&M, what is the percentage of acceptance for deferred students in RD?

Got any letters yet?

Congrats to those that got accepted! I am applying RD!

Did any of you guys apply for the St. Andrews William & Mary Joint Degree Programme? 8)

Congrats to everyone!! I hope to be as successful as you guys. And for those who didn’t get it, there are always RD possibilities… :)

What did you accepted peeps do for your supplements? I just wrote an essay and I’m afraid I won’t get in RD because it’s not creative enough…

I only wrote an essay for the CommonApp…for the W&M supplement I made a little video. I like making videos so I figured that was the best way for me to show them who I am and how I can contribute to the school. Good luck!

I wrote my commonapp essay and submitted a painting instead of the optional essay!

I wrote an essay, and it worked out fine for me. I wouldn’t do a video or piece of artwork unless you are sure it really captures “you.” If you are looking for a sample of the submitted videos, just youtube search “William and Mary optional essay.” I read an article about the variety of optional “essays” WM admissions recieves and some are completely outlandish. I would say the essay is playing it safe, however, submitting a video, although risky, gives you an oppurtunity to be unique. Just don’t be too unique…

Just be yourself, completely and absolutely.
I told my interviewer that if I could be any animal, it would be an alligator. No reason, just the first thing I thought of…he looked at me like I was insane.
But yeah…whatever your essence is, showcase it. I definitely was not admitted because of my numbers.

I always think about William and Mary (i am applying there RD for personal reasons) anyways, do you get the sense that it is a holistic admissions process? I am out of state and my test scores certainly do not reflect my performance, but my grades do.

I used a blank children book and decorated it with wrapping paper and interesting/quirky facts about myself. If you’re short on time though, this may not be the best option; I spent three months working on it (sounds simple–I realize, but in reality it isn’t). From my very new experience with W&M admissions, I think the holistic view is definately seen. I didn’t have stellar SAT scores, or at least as high as other posters (670M, 210CR, 670W), and I didn’t have all As. I worked really hard on my creative supplement, my essay. I got lucky with geographic diversity, and I’m pretty sure that I had a very good teacher recommendation. I hope this makes you feel more confident in applying!

oh really? what state are you from?!

I assume you don’t actually mean 210 in CR, heh

congrats to the new tribe members =)

Plaidskirtkid, I had a C on my transcript from 10th grade trig ad a 1310/1600! I am so fortunate to be admitted, I don’t really know how I was. I was an A/B student up until Junior year, when I began earning straight A’s. I go to an audition-only art magnet school and submitted my portfolio, which I think saved me in the eyes of the admissions officers. Wrote some good essays, good recs, strange EC’s.
Holistic admissions processes, I love you. <3

accepted
in state
4.2 gpa

30 plus act

Thrilled to be part of the tribe!

Actually sort of enjoyed the quirkiness and somewhat cryptic nature of the e-mail, added to the unique W&M experience. Even if most of us were only 98% certain of what it meant, it still felt pretty good. Much tougher for those getting a different e-mail, so no complaints here!

To dry to address a few questions here:

Percentage of those deferred who are admitted: unfortunately less than 10%. That’s why our letter encourages deferred students to begin considering other colleges.

Did anyone apply to St Andrews: No. You cannot apply ED and to St Andrews. You can only apply to that program RD

Does W&M use holistic admission: Absolutely. We believe that every student is more than just an SAT or GPA (although these parts of your application are certainly important). But so are your extracurricular activities, recommendations, essays, and the other information you choose to share. In our application, all things are created equal with the exception of the transcript. We place a little more emphasis on your courses and grades than other parts of the application. Remember however, that W&M is selective and even more selective for out-of-state so you should enter any selective admission process with the right expectations (that if you get in, great, but if you don’t, it’s not that you were inadequate, it’s just that the pool is very strong).

As for the supplement: if you choose to complete the optional submission, we intentionally made the prompt vague and creative so you would feel free to respond in any way you see fit. Just make sure you’re sharing additional substantive information about yourself. That’s what we’re looking for first and foremost whether that comes in writing, video, art, or some other medium.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the admissions committee room. …

Oops! Typo there, I scored a 610 in CR. Thanks for catching that!

Tribe football will be streamed tomorrow (saturday) on NCAA.com in the 2nd round of the football playoffs, game starts at 1:30 if anyone is interested. Basketball will also be playing VCU on Comcast SportsNet in the Mid-Atlantic region at noon.

^I’m going! WM football games are great!
