<p>If you look at the link I posted, you will see that for Division I athletics, there is a sliding scale. If the GPA is higher, then the required ACT or SAT is lower, and vice versa. You are correct that there is a minimum ACT of 17 (or 68 combined), but this only applies to Division II. I have no idea why there should be a difference!</p>

<p>I posted the Division I requirements because the school mentioned has a Division I basketball team.</p>

<p>One other thing. I'm curious ... how do you know what this boy's ACT score and GPA are? If he told you yourself, that is one thing ... but word-of-mouth can be unreliable.</p>

<p>UW Madison isn't that bad of a school that it should have to recruit a 13 ACT, not-so-hot GPA kid to have a basketball team.</p>
