I hate collegeboard. Its not fair, at all. I mean, all my stats are good and the only thing thats bringing me down is my SAT. I've worked three years to do well so I could get into JHU, and I studied 24/7 for the SAT, took Kaplan, everything...but I'm not a good test taker and now my chances of getting in are screwed.

I say we make a petition and get rid of the SATs.
They ruin peoples lives.

Don't need to sound harsh, but it's tests like the SAT that are saving my bacon. There are test-optional schools for kids like you..smart individuals who don't test well. But here's some bad news:

Life is full of tests. GRE, LSATs, MCATs, actuary exams, CPA exams, the works...

Conquer these tests now before they conquer you...

It's true. All your life you're going to have to take these tests. Like it or not. White collar professionals have to take them. Blue collar workers don't, of course, but why would you go to college to become a blue collar worker?

I hate the collegeboard too. Not because of anything specific, like SATs, (although I was worried for some time about the AP Lit exam; literary analysis is not for multiple choice!! stop putting me into a box!).

I hate the collegeboard the way Kira Argounova hated Lenin in Ayn Rand's We the Living. An understated hate for something distant and tyrannical.

tinas, although I am a good test taker, I agree with you that SAT shouldn't be allowed to ruin the lives of kids who are intelligent, creative, can reason well if not pressured for time, etc. I think SAT is necessary evil because the ADCOMs need to somehow normalize kids from various high schools. I don't think test-taking skills determine how well you can do in your job later, but I agree with Heavenwood that good testing ability opens the door to many careers.

and..u might hav overestimated urself becoz of the fact that you get good grades at your grade inflated high school (just a suggestion)...and SAT just landed right in ur face and u just cant accept that fact

Enough of speculations. None of us know each other and most likely we don't know each other's schools, so don't bother to question each other's intelligence. Once you go to college, look back in retrospect, and you'll know how you stood.

I don't know, but I really don't think I overestimated myself. I had a 2.2, and I shot up to a 4.0.

Everything else on my application is wonderful, exceptional, I turned my life around sophomore year. I've had jobs all three years of high school, over 500+ hours of CS, I'm a figure skater, aristic..great essays..my whole application is strong, but the SAT screws me up.

And thats problem I have with it, brilliant, intelligent, creative, wonderful, dedicated kids, can be completely demoted to a lower level because they got a bad score on the SAT and that ruins their chances of going where they belong.

Second, you've worked so hard and in four hours, all that work you done, all that hard work, has gone down the drain.

Now, b/c of my SATs, my counselor says that places like JMU, GMU are matches for me. Thats pathetic, and all because of a goddamn test.

I can't comprehend how you can study so much for the SAT and then do as poorly as you're making it seem. And besides, it's not the end of the world...unless you got below a 2300 (lol kidding)...anyway...really, plenty colleges will accept you if your other stats are as amazing as you say they are. good luck.

At one point, I get so stressed out that I can't think and it takes time for me to recooperate and continue. Thats what happened during my Math section and I screwed it up.

Even though I took over several tests, its not the real thing and the real stress isn't there. Everytime a math secion finished, I started crying becuase there wasn't enough time and there was too much stress for me.

although I am a good student, I agree with you that grades shouldn't be allowed to ruin the lives of kids who are intelligent, creative, can reason well if not pressured for time, etc. I think grades are a necessary evil because the ADCOMs need to somehow measure kids from various high schools. I don't think homework skills determine how well you can do in your job later, but I agree with Heavenwood that good teacher-pleasing ability opens the door to many careers which involve boss-pleasing.

In school my grades are way higher and much better than the kids who scored around the same as me. Its not like I study for 4 hours each night I take less time on my homework and still get higher grades than the kids whose SATs are around the same as mine. So I know its not grade inflated. The kids whose grades are around the same as mine in school score much higher than me and if I scored around the same as them then I would be straight. However now that I dont have the same test scores but similar grades I cant get into the same schools as them. ima be stuck at Ga Tech. I want to go to Rice but that about out of the question.

So even though I am ranked 5th of 205 I socred in the 50% of my school on the SAT even though I dont put in the 4+ hours of studying. I study half of that and still keep a busy schedule.

Oh well no use complaining now hopefully Rice favors 4 years over 4 hours. I think my SAT 2s were good b/c I know that information.

Bearcats, that's not nice. I'm sure this individual is intelligent, and I can't blame him or her (you listed no gender, lol) for being upset. It can be frustrating to excel in so many ways and falter in only one.

However, these tests are important. They seem ridicilious at times, I admit, but you have to take them all your life. Better get used to it.

You are abosolutely correct. Just get rid of it because you and others are bad at it. Might as well just cancel GPA then, since it can ruin your life, and people might just be bad at school. While you are at it, cancel everything people struggle with, then we will have a utopian world.

^^^ I learned some logic recently and what you just did was a fallacy called slippery slope. You said one thing and then everything snowballs after that.

Really it is kind of stupid that the SAT tests only and standardized amount of material that can be studied. Rather we should test more than what people can easily study but some random things that students should know ranging from grammar to history to civics to math and science among others. Also it should be more challenging to create a better range of scorers.

1720 isn't HORRIBLE. I mean at least compared to the idiots at my school! haha thats like a good score at my school cause almost everyone scores around 1500. But yeah, don't worry about it if you have other stats that are good.
