Its Not Fair!!

The SAT is many, many things, but unfair isn’t one of them. If you didn’t do well it is your fault. Grow up and take responsibility.

Hey that’s me!
Actually, you could be talking about hieronymus–exact same improvement, almost the exact same materials. Except I also used RR. Anywayz:

The SAT is a far from perfect measure of intelligence, but so far it’s the best thing out there. As many have noted, GPA is clearly a terrible indicator, due to rampant grade inflation. (The valedictorian last year from my school had over a 4.0 GPA, but only an 1890 SAT–and that was after a long prep class. The stupid thing is that many selective colleges perceive the school as having really high standards, and so tend to accept a lot of grads that really have no business attending. That val got into Harvard, Columbia, Georgetown, Williams, Amherst, Brown, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, and maybe Dartmouth too. Crazy.)

lol, absolutely, I can relate to the person about having the sat as a “life ruiner.”
Heck, I’ve got a wonderful unweighted gpa (top 5% of my class) at my school (30/40th- best high school in the country)…and my school does not use weighting of APs, honors, or whatever.
But I don’t think that I’m a very intelligent person. (lol) I’m a hardworking person who on a daily basis puts all the effort and energy into the work given. Unfortunately, the SAT doesn’t measure my “hardworkingness” or my preserverence but my ability to display my intelligence for a short period.

 • As reiterating what many others have said, the SAT’s or any tests for that matter are needed in life. SAT’s aren’t my forte either.

erm that’s the point. being ONLY hardworking OR intelligent won’t cut it anymore at top schools. you need to be both. hence, primary admissions decisions are based on the interplay of SAT and GPA.

anyway, who says the SAT doesn’t measure perseverance or your ability to work hard? if you know how to prep for it and work hard at it, getting to the 2200+ region is easy if you’re anything close to intelligent enough to get to the top colleges.

The SAT is why I even have a glimmer of hope at top schools. High SAT, high SAT II, 6 high AP scores, and a 3.5 GPA, I think is still competitive.

So if you diss the SAT, you’re dissing my ticket into something other than my local state uni.

The SAT is unfortunately needed.

I know of some honors classes where the only thing you need to get an A is a heartbeat (harsh I know, but you all know of classes like that). Other classes require 2+ hours a night just for the same grade. Not to mention all of the extra credit that’s handed out…

we have plenty of tests given to us by our teachers, districts, schools, etc.

I don’t think the SAT has any real useful purpose, except to rake in $$$ for this company called Collegeboard.

Worth a try!
Especially if you are weak in math…

The SAT is many, many things, but unfair isn’t one of them. If you didn’t do well it is your fault. Grow up and take responsibility.

Inclined to disagree…some people test badly, and money helps…a lot

I want to try ACT.

But my mom will not let me.

How odd.

really because I got a 1910 on the psat and a 31 on my ACT
still ended up w/ good sats…but the 31 (12 essay) gave me confidence
for example…first try math 530 (it improved)
first try ACT 29…much better

The SAT is definitely fair; everybody takes the same test. If you do poorly on the SAT, there are one of 4 possibilities.

Either 1. You aren’t as smart as you think you are
2. You didn’t study enough/didn’t take it seriously
3. You don’t know English well enough because it is not your first language
4. You have serious anxiety issues but for some reason did not qualify or try to get the extra time that they allow for students like you.

You seem to be arguing that your reason is #4, but from your postings, I would bet to guess its #1.

lol.

Do you guys realize I resurrected a thread that is 3 years old now?
