It's time for Vietnamese thread !!!

and Miaoling is also currently living in Vietnam. She just got accepted into Amherst, YAY!! SO happy for her!! :D:D

C'est la vie. Watashi ga watashi deiukagiri :D

Is the schooling system in Vietnam hard. How many classes do you have to take as a senior?
Are all of you guy only apply to American universities what about European colleges?
What do you do in your spare time while living in Vietnam? I bet there are a lot of things to do there!!!!
Unfortunately, those who are living in America don't have anything enjoyable to do. After school we go home and do our homework.
Maybe this is the reason why I'm addicted to korean movies because that the only thing for me to to to kill time.
Hopefully, I will have a chance to visit Vietnam once I gratuated from college. Maybe things have changed significantly from the last time I saw it.
What are your career goals?
Do you wish to stay in Vietnam or migrate to live in America?
What are the reason that you all want to attend American Universities. is it because you could find a job easier if you have an American college degree??
I'm just curious!!!!!!

Well, lots of "personal" questions :D So I think each of us will answer them.
Starts with me:
The schooling system in Vietnam is both hard and easy. It is hard because you have to memorize a lot even if you do not understand anything. It is also easy that if you can know how to satisfy your teachers, scores wouldn't be a problem.
Vnmese edu system divides us into classes specialized in Math, Chem, Lit, Eng, Phy... We cannot choose classes but are assigned to one based on our High School Entrance Exam Scores and the major we choose. There are 35 students in my class. We have to learn 11 subjects including Math, Phy, Chem, Lit, Eng, Biology, History, Geography, Engineering, Civic Education and Physical Education. All students from grade 8 have to learn all of those subjects. We cannot drop or add courses because that term does not exist in Vnmese high school edu system.
Well, most of us apply to US Colleges looking for a full-need scholarship as they are more generous than EU colleges. Fin aid is also the biggest problem to Vnmese applicants.
In our spare time we tend to play some sports, listen to music and do what many other kids do. But we also have to take "extra classes" in order to get some prizes at the City Competition, National Competition, High School Entrance Exam and Univ Entrance Exam. There are not many community servies and xtracurri activities besides sports to do in VN. But we still have to spend such a lot of time doing homework and extra exercises that such activities can only be done in the summer.
Well, my career goal is to work in the education field: an admission officer, a high school counselor or school administrator... Well I have not decided yet. :D
We do not (and cannot) migrate to live in the US as our parents do not allow us to and we ourselves do not want to. Home Sweet Home! :D
The answer for the last question is YES! VN univ degree ~ worthless. Vn is globally integrating but out edu system is not. Thus our degrees are not internationally recognized -> chance to get a good job is small :D

Education in VN is mostly theoretical. You have to memorize a LOT of concepts. Before each class the teacher would call upon a random number of people, they therefore would have to read out loud (by memory) everything in the last lesson in front of the whole class :D <<~~ This is how we are graded... >.<
As for the number of classes ~~> what Long said. :D We are required to study the same subjects by the Ministry of Education: Math, Literature, Chem, Phys, Bio, Geo, History, Foreign Language (English, French, Russian, Chinese, or Japanese, depends on your class), Civic Education (studying the laws and stuff), PE, Engineering. Though at my school you have to take another really weird subject: farming T.T (I go to Chu Van An, btw, and it's not a country school... :|)
In addition to the curriculum at school, most of us "have" to take extra classes in order to better understand what we're being taught in school. And after 12 grade we have to take the University Entrance exam, which is super super hard and extremely competitive (though the universities here SUCK big time...) ~~> Seniors don't have much free time until mid July. Some kids don't even get home from class before 9pm everyday. Thank god I'm not one of them! :D So I guess I'm pretty fortunate to have more free time than others. But I just sit home all day, glueing my eyes to the moniter. Haha, just kidding. There are a few extracurricular activities or community services to join if you look for them. My class just organized a concert to raise money for an orphanage and it was pretty fun, looked good on my resume too :D http://s14.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1L0BYAXCEIZX133N5E9N838LTN <~~ one of our performances (I'm the one in the middle)
I do hope you visit Vietnam as soon as you have the time. I don't know when was the last time that you visited but I think it's always been beautiful and the most peaceful place on earth!! :)
After I graduate I will definitely go back and find a good job, though I don't know what my career will be yet. IMO, Vietnam is the best place to live in. The food is wonderful, the people are smart and friendly, and everything is so cheap! :D It doesn't have anything to do with parents...Disregard what Long said. It's true that most Vietnamese kids are taught to be obedient, but I must consider myself the rebellious type :D
And about the American college degree thing, I think it's easier to find a job because you have obtained better knowledge and experience from the education rather than because of the degree.

Do your parents really let you settle in US, Giang :D ? I doubt it :D

They have never mentioned it but if I want to then they have no say :)

Yours are so easy-going, mine are not :D But anyway I do not want to as living in VN is so cheap :D

Well, I don't find the Vietnamese education as tough as giangLe mentioned. I have never taken a single extra class since I started high school. And I don't think the Vietnamese university entrance exam is super super hard. One more thing, where in the world is a prestigious college/university not hard to get into?

You know what the problem is? That it's so hard to get in college in Vietnam (and costs one hell of a lot too), yet the degree earned in Vietnam isn't worth a cent outside the country. If you charge so much for something, it better be worth it. In this case, it isn't.

Good reason, miaoling :D
Vnmese univ is goddamn hard to get into 8-}

Wow, thanks all of you that contributed to my questions. Hvietlong, how come your parents don't let you go to study in the US?
Good luck to all of you!!!! GiangLe, I hope you will be successful when you decide to continue your education in America.
Well I have to say good bye for now. This past week was my spring break.
But tomorrow, I have to start school again, There are a massive paper application, financial aid and yes homework from my classes.(Too bad I decided to take all the hard classes during my senior year).Anyone has taken Calculus??(what is the average grade to take this class for Vietnamese student?)
THANKS!!!!

My parents do let me study in the US but not migrate to live in the US :D
Good luck with your AP classes :D

Does anyone know the Vietnamese student admitted to Princeton this year? I have just seen the admission update on VA. I'm dying to know who he/she is. If it were Harvard, then I wouldn't be that inquisitive. But Princeton is another matter. Please, everyone, tell me if you know.

people have abandoned this topic after they got accepted :|

Well I think it's because of the goddamn exam approaching

Best of luck for the exams! :)

Now that the exam is gone, what are you busy doing?

Preparing for College :D (studying US politics, christianity and learning a 3rd language) :D

How are you studying them?
