I'm just curious, what kind of kids transfer to Duke after freshman year? Are we talking kids who are suddenly blowing away the competition at the local community college or students at Harvard who decided that... well... they don't like Harvard? My guess would be something in between, like the random overachiever at Wake Forest. Any ideas?

Also, is transferring harder or easier than just applying from high school? I would think that if you're going to a decent college (top-50 maybe?) that transferring would be easier than just applying from high school. Am I completely off base here?

Whatever you can tell me would be cool.

transfering is much harder. they have a VERY limited number of spots for transfer applicants.

from collegeboard.com:

Total number of transfer students who applied: 460
Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 28

that's 6%, so yes it is considerably harder to get in as a transfer student

Just a suggestion: it isnt too early to be thinking about it... just dont get set on it. Make sure to give wherever you are going a fair chance... you might fall in love with it and be so glad you are there instead of Duke, but not if you come in with a "I'm going to be leaving after a year" mentality.

So we can establish that the average transfer applicant has a 6% chance. Where would you put the average Wake Forest's applicant's chances at?

Firstly, did you get waitlisted this year for Duke? because that MAY help you slightly... secondly it probably depends more on the grades freshman year then anything else (like which school), though being somewhere good like Wake is bound to help.

Congrats on Wake though man! Great school... I visited for one of their campus days and was seriously considering it even though, after always being a Duke fan, being a Demon Deacon would be hard...

If after freshman year you decide to attempt a transfer to Duke I wish you the best of luck... but my guess is you will end up falling in love with Wake and not being interested in leaving. I could be wrong though... its been known to happen.

lol no I don't go to Wake. I'm actually in the Honors Program at UMich... I just used Wake cuz its similar in academics and you Dukies are probably more familiar with it because of proximity.

And no, I didn't get waitlisted at Duke. I was deferred ED, then rejected RD.

It's not so much that I won't give the university "a fair chance." I'm sure I'll love the school and Ann Arbor's suppose to be a fun college town. It's the state of Michigan that i'm really opposed to. I honestly just can't see myself living in the northern Midwest for more than a year.

O and by the way, you deserve to be shot for even attending a campus day at Wake Forest after being accepted to Duke. Shame on you.

(Please nobody flip out. I'm kidding.)

please son... day off of school AND free stuff? thats how I roll!

I will be attending BC next year (i was deferred and then rejected from Duke this year), and i was wondering if a 3.8 GPA at BC would give me a decent shot (i know its very hard, but would i be competitive?)

HS Stats
Class Rank: will be about 25/449 (was 38th after junior year, this was on application)
SAT: 1500/2180
9 AP Classes (2 5's and a 4 so far) and 1 IB (6) in high school

Maybe..

I'm good friends with someone who transferred to Duke after his freshman year at Northwestern. I'm sure he did wonderfully there, and didn't hate it or anything, he just didn't get into Duke the first time around and really wanted to go.

You guys are both going to really great, really fun schools. My friends at UMich thought for sure they'd hate living in the area and realized that it was the best possible thing for them. Please go into your school with an open mind-- and just do as best you can academically... I'm sure if you express consistent interest in Duke and do well elsewhere you'll stand solid chances... but it's just a crapshoot.

i applied to Duke this year from an ivy league

i was waitlisted.....................

Yea, I used to work in the admissions office and was also good friends with the Dean who handles transfers. The transfer students, according to them, have to have almost spotless grades and something interesting that they would bring to the duke community. It's a very difficult thing to do, but you should definitely try if it means that much to you. It might be hard to leave your homeschool though, after you've made a bunch of new friends.
