We have all grown up under totalitarian regimes. The regime of our parents, the regime of our teachers, the regime of our older brothers and sisters. The closest we have ever gotten to democracy as children was when we were standing with our friends under the jungle gym deciding what to do next. This is perhaps the closest we have ever gotten to democracy even as adults. Once you’ve grown up, you have inherently subjected yourself to the whim of the rich and powerful. You want to survive, so you do what they say. And you know that you must subject yourself to the whim of the government, or else you get suspected of terrorism.</p>

<p>Even our “democratic” system is utterly flawed. Has it ever occurred to you that if you vote for a losing candidate, your vote doesn’t count? In fact, it’s counted in the opposite direction. Actually, your vote barely counts anyway. It’s the votes of Congress that really matter. And the people in Congress are not necessarily wiser than the general public. If anything, they’re more corrupt than the general public.</p>

<p>What prepares us for these oppressive circumstances? The bureaucracy of the family does. We are used to bossing around our younger siblings and being bossed around by our older siblings. We learn that the first rule is the rule of power. There is no real moral law. Life isn’t fair. “Might makes right.” An adult can stay up after 9 PM, but a child cannot. This is because the adults have a means of enforcing their will. The adults can make the children suffer using time-outs, spankings, etc. Resistance will only worsen the punishment. The children quickly learn that it is not wise to disobey.</p>

<p>As Erich Fromm once said, “Power means the capacity to inflict unlimited pain and suffering to another human being.” Apparently the adults have power that the children do not. In order to create a truly democratic and classless society, we must eliminate this family structure. It is undemocratic and oppressive.
