ITT Technical Institute

My 27 year old son spent a few years in college but never received a degree. He's been working full time since he stopped attending and is doing okay but apparently has decided that he needs to go back. Today he told me that he went to talk to someone at ITT Tech and they suggested that he take a two year certification program. He's never liked school much but does well in the classes that interest him so he thought this idea sounded like it would work for him.

My concern is that it's a very expensive school for what it is. He figures it will cost $40K for the two years which will all come from loans. I also fear that he will start the program and lose interest half way through and be in debt with nothing to show for it. I told him a community college would be a better idea but they have general ed requirements that he doesn't like.

Anybody have experience with this type of school and suggestions for what I can say to him? In the end, it will be his decision, but I'm very uneasy about it.

Private for-profit schools typically have a set of negatives which I’d rather not elaborate on. I would suggest a community college that has a program in what he’s interested in. You might be able to find the certificate program at a state university too where he doesn’t have to take Gen Eds. I feel that the brand name of a state university and even a community college is better than ITT Tech.

I would agree that it sounds silly to spend that money for a 2 year degree when he could spend 20% of that at a community college and likely take most of the same classes.

Furthermore, I remember seeing the notice “Credits earned are unlikely to transfer.” which is awful if he decides he wants to get a 4 year degree at a University at some point.

Ditto. I’d avoid places like ITT Tech. There are much better alternatives as stated above.
