<p>Is Bloomington liberal or conservative politically and socially (ie any gays)?. Is it safe to walk alone at night? How do folks who don't want to be Greek socialize?</p>

<p>My friend is currently a freshman at IU. I sent her your question and here's her response:</p>
<p>Bloomington is AMAZINGLY liberal.
there are at least 3 gay bars. the school wide drag queen contest (Miss Gay IU) is held in the IU Auditorium. it's got a huge and thriving GBLT community.
and it's usually safe to walk alone at night... I wouldn't recommend it... bringing a friend is a good plan. but downtown is usually pretty hopping in the evenings, esp. on weekends. but I've never really heard of any muggings or assaults.
and there's loads of non-Greek socializing.</p>
