IU Jacobs School of Music

I've been accepted at IU Jacobs School of Music as a cello performance major and am trying to weigh out my options, but I have a couple questions concerning IU.

Can anyone give their opinions on the IU Jacobs School of Music especially in the area of opportunities and support for undergrads? Is the competitive atmosphere overwhelming and does it make the community (both between peers and teacher/student relationships) less supportive?

I know it has an amazing reputation, but all I keep hearing is that the school is too hard on undergrads and that all the opportunities are given to grad students. Can anyone explain specifically what opportunities undergrads miss out on?

Also, what are the benefits of going to a school that's not as competitive or as high of a level but might offer more individual attention? Disadvantages? How big of a difference does the level of other musicians in the program have on individual success?

Obviously, this all varies from person to person, but if someone has any personal experiences related to this issue they can share, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

You would probably get some very helpful responses in the music major forum here on CC.

Much depends on your personality. Our daughter anticipates working very hard there as an undergrad, but wanted the challenge (and her private teacher thought it would be a good fit). Don’t have any idea of the level of camaraderie in then cello studio(s).
