I want to major in accounting. I got into UGA and Kelley. Will get money from both. I will get into FL. I go to a feeder High School and I am in the top 5% of class. I have prepaid and Bright Futures. Ross is a crap shoot. I want to major in accounting.
Is Ross worth the $?
Of the other three, best accounting program?
Should I just go to UF for free regardless of major?
For accounting go to UF for free. Be thankful you have a top school that’s dirt cheap. I think accounting is moving towards being a 5 year program. Good luck
@2021 Given the size of UF, its car from 13th grade. You’ll meet plenty of new people there. That’s a juvenile response I hear too often from teens who don’t understand finances and value.
If you have prepaid and Bright Futures I’d go to UF. With well over 30,000 undergraduates you will have ample opportunity to meet new people at UF. You could also try to do a semester or a summer program abroad if you want to broaden your horizons.
Keep in mind that to be a CPA you will need 150 credits (a typical BS degree is around 120 credits). While some students can do this in four years (using AP credit, summer classes etc.) many go on for a one year Masters degree.
Just as an FYI, you can’t major in Accounting at Ross. Ross only has a BBA program. This is the exact reason my daughter didn’t apply to Business at Michigan and applied Engineering only. She however, did apply to UT-Austin McCombs for Business and is double majoring there. So if you want a top Accounting school that is where you should’ve looked as they’re #1 for Accounting.
It’s not a juvenile response. I understand finances and value. I also understand the culture at UF. I have a choice to make. I asked what was your next choice, you didn’t have to insult me.
Kelley has a great business school and Accounting program, but it’s not Michigan (but again no Accounting at UM) but I know plenty of people who come out of there with jobs at Big 4 firms.
The next question however, is if you’re up for the cold. Where we live in Chicago, it’s often a safety school for kids that don’t get into other Business schools, but you 100% cannot go wrong with Kelley and will definitely get a job if you do well. One other thing about IU is it’s heavy frat/sorority life.
As a parent I totally understand your reasoning about not wanting to go to UF. If you don’t need to stay in state then you do what works best for you. My daughters refused to go to UIUC so I have one at CS at an equally as good program but about 3x the cost and the one at UT also uber expensive but they couldn’t be happier.
Nothing wrong with your GPA, score is probably low so TO is probably good option. Wisconsin Business has become desirable these days for some who prefer what they view as a better business school around here than IU but job placement isn’t as good unless one has connections. Minnesota is another one that people love, but it’s an urban campus but give $. I don’t know enough about Tulane other than they rocked covid. Not at all familiar with Maryland or FSU. We loved Wash U, my senior didn’t. Felt it was too small. It is a great school has a great business school and Emory is very similar to Wash U size wise much better climate. Both Wash U and Emory though you’ll find a ton of Pre-Med or Pre-Law students, Emory especially a lot who want pre-med. Not sure if that’s the same at Wash U but my ex husband went to Emory. Both cities will give you good opportunities. Your grades are definitely there and you have a high rank.
UM your portfolio will mean a lot and business extracurriculars. Your only real issue is if you truly want to be an accountant. Otherwise if you get into Ross it’s pretty hard to refuse, however, don’t sacrifice what you really want to do for that. I’m not sure if someone needs a BS in Accounting to get their Masters.
Ross loves Deca stuff so that will go a long way and you won’t have to worry about a job in a bad economy. And, if you don’t get into Ross, but only into LSA there, you can just major in Econ and still have no problem getting a great job from UM. It is impossible these days however to transfer into Ross later though.
You won’t get any scholarship money from UMich…is it affordable without taking out more than the frosh $5,500 loan? I agree with SRparent you should apply TO there.
Interested in your statement that companies don’t recruit from UF…what types of companies/jobs are you looking for that you can’t do from UF?
@202river Haha, I hope they do too - I have 4 of them and I am so happy this is my last college rodeo! This should have been my easy kid to go through this and then frickin Covid hit!
As for UF, it’s actually very popular from up here. A lot of kids want to go there and UT-Austin. Oddly some get in UT but not UF, but generally a lot more get into UF and go. Top ones are able to qualify for something that gives them in state tuition so it makes it a good deal.
My daughter at Cornell has a friend from Florida that passed up some big full ride thing in the Honors college at UF for the same reason as you’re stating. She didn’t want to go where everyone else goes. I think there are a bunch my Texas daughter knows that did the same. In our case mine also didn’t want to stay here and one said Illinois was her absolute last choice! Hah. Guess it worked out and it will for you. You will figure it out and know where your place is.
Many people will shake their head at you about passing up UF if it’s free, but if you can afford it then sometimes that is not the issue and you go to the best school for you. It sounds like your parents are supportive and understand that.
Also, once you have your decisions to make, try finding students in those programs that you can speak with to give you the good, bad and ugly as that really gives you the best perspective.
Companies don’t recruit at UF? I find that hard to believe. It’s the #6 public school this year. Lots of companies moving to Florida. Didn’t Goldman just announce moves to Florida?
Pretty much all state schools get most of their students from in-state. That’s how it works. In-state tuition is always pretty much cheaper than out-of-state tuition. I think I remember a stat that most kids stay within 50 miles of home for college.
I could see Ross or Kelley IF you could get in-state tuition, scholarships, or bring enough credits to graduate in 3 years. Maybe but even then it would be hard to justify vs free.
We were in similar boat last year with S20 but our in-state options (PA) are nowhere near free. Pitt or PSU still would’ve been $30k/year or more. That made the decision to go to Georgia Tech easier, especially since he carried 51 credits. If he would’ve had a free option like UF he would’ve done it and saved the money for Law/Grad school.
Note that 30 to 50 credits may not be as valuable in the context of subject credit for specific course requirements (i.e. will OOS flagship accept your Florida college economics course(s) as fulfilling its own economics course(s), or will you have to retake the economics course(s) and forfeit the duplicated credit?).
