IU Placement tests

For anyone who has ever taken placement tests at IU, how tough are they? Is the math placement test focused mainly on pre-calc, or a little of algebra and geometry as well? Are the language and math tests very long? Are they all multiple choice?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

The math placement test was almost all algebra and some geometry, it was not very difficult at all and I was very surprised at how easy it was. It was all multiple choice and you filled in your answers on the scantron sheet. The test is not very long, either - I believe I remember it being no more than 30-35 questions. The calculus placement test (optional) is pretty short and is not too bad, either.

The language placement test is also multiple choice and is not too long. There are three sections to the placement tests - grammar, reading comprehension, and speech comprehension. For the speech comprehension, you hear a dialogue and answer questions about the dialogue.

Overall, the math and language placement tests are not that bad. I found them to be relatively easy and short.

If you have qualifying ap scores do you still have to take placement tests?

I am pretty sure that everybody has to take the basic math and language placement tests. However, they do have optional calculus and biology placement tests. If you have high enough credit for one of those, you do not have to take the biology and/or calculus placement tests. I got a 4 on the AP Biology test and received credit for it even though I did not take IU’s biology placement test.

For CAS students, you should try to do well on the placement test since it may place you above the basic level courses. Be careful about French though, you should try to pass the third semester level since the 3rd semester French is pretty tough.

I am worried I will do well, but not excellent on the Spanish placement test. Would it be better to purposely do poorly and have an easy class so I don’t test into the second semester of Spanish and have to struggle?

Also, does anyone know if Kelley students have to take 2 semesters or 4 semesters of a foreign language? I’ve seen It listed both ways.

Thanks.

Mojo24rox, Kelley students are required to take foreign language courses only if they do the International Business co-major. Most Kelley students do not take any foreign language classes.

You use the general education requirements of the the IU bulletin to see what satisfies the “World Languages & Cultures” requirement, which applies to all students at IUB, including all Kelley students who enter after June 2011. See pages 2-3 of the bulletin for info about the World Languages & Cultures requirement.

The easiest way to meet the requirement is to take two "“World Culture” courses for a total of six credits. You can find a list of the courses on pages 15-17 of the pdf.

You should just go ahead and take the Spanish placement test and do as well as you can. If you test into second year Spanish, you will receive automatically four credits for first year Spanish. You are not obligated to take further Spanish courses to keep those four credits. So, you have nothing to lose by taking the Spanish placement test.

You can take two (S200 and S250) to satisfy the World Languages & Cultures requirement through Spanish classes after testing into S200 if you like; or, more easily, just take two “World Culture” courses to satisfy the World Languages & Cultures requirement.

Thanks bthomp1. I took the online spanish placement test yesterday, and we’ll see what credits I get.

If you took the test yesterday, your score probably already been posted on OneStart. So you can find out that way if you tested out of S100.
